The couples have been together between 13 and 31 years.

As yet there is no evidence to support the idea of the men being gay. The men are being held for participating in a party with alcoholic drinks, music and dancing.

Okay this is a long one so I aam going to put it in two differnet journals.

This article was found in the Greenville News(SC) in the Metro section of today's paper.
Picture headline: Gay rights group protests at BJU
the police had to ask Pastor Stan Craig to move away from members of Soulforce.

3 arrested at campus gate(headline of article)

Preachers with bullhorns shouted hellfire across Wade Hampton Boulevard at gay rights activists who stood silently in front of Bob Jones University on Wednesday, as traffic rumbled by on the impenetrable gulf between the two.

Three members of the group Soulforce were arrested briefly for attempting to walk onto the campus of the fundamentalist Christian school, which had told them they weren't welcome.

"Bob Jones University did not choose today's visit by Soulforce and took no delight in the protests and counterprotests at the perimeter of our campus," said Carol Keirstead, chief communications officer for the school.

"BJU is pleased that we were able to defend the authority of Scripture, demonstrate Christ-like love and compassion, and present a clear gospel message."

The university set up a table with sandwiches and chips for the protesters and a letter from school president Stephen Jones in an envelope with each group member's name printed on it.

The protesters refused the food, however, sending it to a homeless shelter instead.

"It's a gesture that seems very empty at this point," said Mandy Matthias, a Soulforce coordinator.

The Lynchburg, Va.-based group, which includes young people from across the country, is visiting -- or attempting to visit -- 32 colleges and universities where openly homosexual students aren't allowed to enroll.

Two groups of 25 each, one traveling the eastern part of the country and the other the West, have been arrested for trespassing numerous times since March 8, when they began their tour.

The group visiting BJU had 43 arrests before coming to Greenville, Matthias said.

Soulforce had asked BJU for permission to come on campus to discuss homosexuality and the Bible with students. BJU denied the request, saying it believes the Bible is clear on the issue and there's no room for dialogue.

Two of the students arrested were carrying works of art they had made that they said expressed the pain they have felt as a result of anti-gay prejudice and "spiritual violence." They said they wanted to present the pieces to the BJU art museum, one part of this private school that is open to the public.

The third student arrested tried to walk onto campus while reading from a list of 57 "theses" outlining the group's position on the Bible and homosexuality and its complaints against BJU. The gesture, at this staunchly Protestant institution, was patterned after Martin Luther's 95 theses that sparked the Protestant Reformation.

The three were handcuffed and led to a paddy wagon waiting inside the university's main entrance, where they were ticketed and released after about 15 minutes.

Members of Soulforce acknowledged later that they had asked police to use handcuffs to symbolize that this was an actual arrest.

Capt. G.S. McLaughlin of the Greenville Police Department said the three were charged with trespassing after notice, an offense that carries a penalty of 30 days in jail or a fine of $500, plus court costs and assessments of up to $700.

Charged, according to tickets, were: Amanda Beth Harris, 22, of Lonoke, Ark.; Katherine Leigh Higgins, 24, of Minneapolis, Minn.; and Bronwen Rose Tomb, 23, of New London, Conn.

The event drew a variety of protesters and counterprotesters, with police keeping those they deemed to be "picketing" separated on the sidewalk in front of the campus. But there was some mingling between people of opposing viewpoints, and a few tense arguments, but no violence.

Soulforce members read from the Bible and sang "Amazing Grace" as the three who were arrested returned to their ranks.

About 30 men in suits lined both sides of the street outside the university's main entrance, most of them carrying signs, and some of throwing verbal daggers at the Soulforce members in voices that grew increasingly hoarse.

"You may call yourself gay, but the most you'll ever be is queer in the sight of God," one megaphone-amplified preacher shouted at the group from across the four-lane highway.

Some of the preachers were hurling brimstone at BJU as well as at the protesters, saying the university should have done more than simply deny the group entrance to campus.

"We believe Bob Jones Sr. would have been out here with all his students standing with us," said Nate Ellis, a student at Georgia Bible College who stood at the gate wearing a placard with passages of Scripture on his front and back.

Soulforce members said this, the 10th stop on their tour, was the first time they had been greeted with such a reception.

"I think it's really sad, and the really sad thing is that they're doing this in the name of Christianity," said Soulforce member Jarrett Lucas of Philadelphia.

Keirstead, the university spokeswoman, said BJU didn't initiate contact with any of the counter protesters and discouraged local people from protesting the protesters.

"Those who have responded to Soulforce with name-calling or ridicule do not represent Bob Jones University, nor do we believe they represent a biblical approach to a group such as Soulforce," she said.

Members of Soulforce kept their vigil in front of the school for about five hours, mostly in silence or in song. They held a brief news conference and answered questions about their lives and beliefs in interviews.

Bronwen Tomb, one of the three who was arrested, said her artwork, which depicted two gagged soldiers in a jeep, represented her tortured feelings about being kicked out of the Coast Guard after acknowledging that she was a lesbian.

Asked what she thought about the preacher across the street, she said, "He's not saying anything that we all haven't heard a thousand times and thought about a lot.

"It would be nice if he would stop and listen to what we have to say."

Not all of the evangelists were of the shouting variety. A few mingled quietly with the group, some kneeling to pray for them as they sang "Jesus Loves Me."

"We want to reach them and lead them out of this destructive lifestyle," said Ante Pavkovic, who came from Charlotte with a group called Operation Save America.

Scott Bradford, a member of Faith Free Presbyterian Church in Greenville, engaged two members of the group in an in-depth theological debate after the loud preachers had left.

"You're never going to get through to somebody standing out here telling people 'You're going to hell, you're going to hell,'" Bradford said.

Less than a mile away from BJU, a new billboard went up to coincide with the Soulforce visit, announcing a program offered by Spartanburg-based Truth Ministry, a group that says it helps homosexuals become heterosexuals through Christ's healing power.

"Change is possible, because I have not only seen it but I have experienced it myself," said McKrae Game, executive director of the organization.

The Rev. Donna Stroud, pastor of Metropolitan Community Church, a gay-accepting congregation in Duncan, said she doesn't believe that anyone who is truly homosexual can change his or her orientation and believes the group uses guilt to manipulate people.

"I think his approach and his words are just as hateful as those guys down the street (preaching)," she said. "They're just doing it in a different way."

Soulforce members said they planned to spend the Easter weekend in Charleston and Myrtle Beach before heading to their next protest stop at Montreat College in North Carolina next Tuesday.

"I think that we have made our point," Matthias said.

In a chilling reminder of the attack on Soho eight years ago, the Metropolitan police have confirmed that nails were packed with gas cannisters found in a car bomb this morning.

The vehicle was crashed and then abandoned on Haymarket in central London, part of the route for tomorrow's London Pride parade.

The BBC reports that police were alerted by an ambulance crew who spotted smoke coming from the car.

There was concern that the entire Pride event, including performances in Trafalgar Square and Leicester Square, would have to be cancelled.

However, no explosives were discovered in the car, which was subjected to a controlled explosion.

It is in the process of being removed from Haymarket now. The area remains sealed off.

Pride organisers say that tomorrow's events, including the parade, will go ahead as planned. Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to take part.

It is unclear who was responsible for the car bomb, if Haymarket was the intended target, or if the bomb was connected to the Pride parade.

London's gay community has been targeted by bombing before.

David Copeland, now 30, terrorised London's minority communities for thirteen days in the spring of 1999.

Bombs in Brixton and Brick Lane caused serious injuries.

The nail bomb he planted in gay pub the Admiral Duncan, in London's Old Compton Street, killed three people and injured eighty.

Copeland was 22 when he carried out his 13-day hate campaign.

When he was captured, his lawyers tried to claim he was mentally ill and he was tried on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

He chose the first gay pub from an alphabetical list and on Friday 30th April 1999, his nail bomb ripped through the Admiral Duncan pub in Soho.

Andrea Dykes, 27, who was four months pregnant with her first child, died in the bomb, along with her friends, Nick Moore, 31, and John Light, 32.

They were having a drink in Soho before attending a West End musical.

Mr Light was to be the baby's godfather. Andrea's husband, Julian, was seriously injured.

Some of the wounded had limbs amputated.

Copeland's attack on London's gay community remains one of the darkest days in the city's history.

Scotland considers new law to protect gays
Scotland's lawmakers are set to consider new laws to protect gays after a private members bill was lodged in Holyrood yesterday calling for violence towards gay and disabled groups to be treated as seriously as violence against religious or ethnic groups.

The Sentencing of Offences Aggravated by Prejudice (Scotland) Bill, proposed by Patrick Harvie, a Scottish Green MSP, would bring Scotland into line with England and Wales, where courts have been able to impose tougher sentences for offences committed due to the victims disability or sexual orientation since April 2003.

There are no guarantees that enough MSPs will support the bill, but it appears to have received a warm welcome from the government.

Ken: UK anti-discrimination law 'not working'

Irish government criticised by own Equality Authority over gay teachers
The Irish Equality Authority has accused the Irish Government of hypocrisy over its commitment to gay rights after claims it is refusing to change laws that discriminate against gay teachers.

Police adopt softly-softly approach on public orgies
American police adopted a distinctly relaxed approach to this year's Folsom Street Fair in San Francisco, taking little notice of the hundreds of men baring their genitals on every street corner.

Orgies of men fellating and fondling each other in the street provoked laughs and photographs from curious onlookers but no police action, according to reports.

Two reporters for Americans for Truth about Homosexuality documented prevalently older men walking down the street completely naked, men masturbating in public with groups of visitors watching them, men and women beating each other with whips, women walking around with their breast exposed and a large smattering of gay and straight master-slave couples.

With LGBT, it seems like there are a lot of people who think it's terrible and argue and fight about it and a lot of people who just prefer to ignore it.

That blood thing though, that's terrible. So many people getting infected... goodness gracious...

Thanks for posting, Grandpa Dave!

A quote from Pink News .....
8th November 2007 12:35
Tony Grew

After weeks of delay, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act has been passed by the US House of Representatives.

It passed by 235 to 184 - 35 Republicans joined 200 Democrats and 35 Republicans voted for the bill.

159 Republicans were joined in voting against by 25 Democrats, many of whom were angry that protections for trans people had been removed from the bill.

ENDA, which would make it illegal to fire, refuse to hire or promote a person based on sexual orientation, now goes to the Senate.

The decision to remove trans people from the scope of the legislation caused anger among the LGBT community in the US, with many demanding an "all or nothing" stance on ENDA.

Tammy Baldwin, the only openly lesbian Congresswoman who tried to reinstate trans protections, said:

"As in all movements, achieving success is a process, and today’s legislative accomplishment marks a milestone, but certainly not the end, of our quest.

"I offered an amendment because I strongly believe that we must prohibit job discrimination against people because of their gender identity.

"Those left behind by this bill deserve to hear, on the floor of the House, that they are not forgotten and our job will not be finished until they, too, share fully in the American Dream."

The White House has already indicated that the President will veto ENDA if it makes it through the Senate.

Many of the House Democrats elected for the first time last November do not want ENDA to include protections for trans people, fearful of a backlash from conservatives.

This is the first time since 1994 that legislation that protects LGB people at work has been brought to the House. Pioneering rights activists first tried to pass similar laws in 1974.

"History teaches us that progress on civil rights is never easy," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said yesterday.

"It is often marked by small and difficult steps."

ENDA's supporters in the Senate will need the votes of 60 of the 100 Senators rather than a simple majority to overcome expected Republican attempts to kill the legislation.

Currently 17 states have protections for LGB people; eight of those states extend that protection to trans people.

In 1996 similar legislation failed in the Senate by one vote.

87% of the top Fortune 500 companies in the US already provide protection from discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation.

The US military and religious organisations are excluded from the legislation, which also does not force employers to extend benefits to same-sex partners.

The rift between church and state in Spain showed no signs of healing today after the country's government said it would not accept "moral guardianship" from anyone.

Deputy Prime Minister Maria Teresa Fernandez de la Vega said that the Church could no longer impose its morality on the country.

Last week the Prime Minister of Spain responded to Roman Catholic leaders after they criticised government policy supporting gay marriage, easier divorces and abortion.

Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero spoke out following comments made the previous Sunday in Madrid at a Catholic Church rally led by Cardinals and Bishops.

Clearly angry, Mr Zapatero defended his government's policies, saying they were supported by the "immense majority" of the Spanish population and that everyone had rights in Spain, whether they belonged to a religion or not.

A spokesperson for Mr Zapatero's PSOE Socialist party added that in a democratic environment there was no place for legislation regarding faith.

Jose Blanco, secretary of the party's federal executive, went further, referring to the Church hierarchy "and their lies" and reminding them that "lying is a sin."

In 2005 Spain legalised gay marriage.

Pope Benedict XVI addressed the rally on Sunday 30th December by a videolink from Rome.

He told the crowd, estimated at 150,000 people, that the family is "based on the unbreakable union of man and woman and represents the privileged environment where human life is welcomed and protected from the beginning to its natural end."

The Archbishop of Mardid claimed that the government's family policy was a retrograde step for human rights.

The Zapatero government introduced full gay marriage in Spain in 2005 and the main opposition party, Partido Popular, has said it does not intend to overturn it.

However, some PP politicians have hinted they may "return" to the issue.

The Socialists and PP are only a few percentage points apart in opinion polls.

Many commentators have viewed the rally, which was supported by PP, as an attempt by the Church to affect the outcome of March's general election.
