I have Night sweats. I sometimes wake up and have to turn my pillow over, cause its soaked. Wife gets totally grossed out. I have nightmares about being killed, some I awake from and some I cannot remember but my wife does. She hears me scream stuff. I recently bought a set of pillows that can be thrown in the washer, which is cool. I like to keep the room cool. I have noticed I have started to sweat more while up also. The meds are making me sweat, its funny.... Therapist says the whole fright for flight thingy..

Some meds do make you sweat. My ex just used to have night sweats for no reason, so it may not be your problems causing it.

Yeah, the meds made me more sweaty than usual for a while, but it is wearing off after several months of being on them. Or, hopefully I am sweating less because I am getting fitter and can cycle into work more easily without it nearly killing me....! I can but hope...

I have night sweats too but I cannot blame them on the meds as I also had them before. I cannot blame them on my problems with depression or anxiety either, as I have had them whilst very happy and not onyl during the low points of my life.

It is really wierd and has often worried me as I have read that they can be a sign of an underlying health problem, but myself, I have never found out what that is. Sometimes they do coincide with nasty dreams or nightmares (like last night when I had terrifying nightmares and woke up drenched on THREE separate occasions! Needless to say, the sheets needed changing!) But sometimes they do not, like Ferengi said, and I wake up with the wetness of the sweat, rather than being woken by the dreams.

If anyone can think why we get night sweats like this for no reason then please let me know as I would like to know what the purpose is of our bodies deciding to soak themselves in sweat and keep us awake and uncomfortable!

My ex has an excellent doctor and she was completely puzzled by this one. Maybe an endocrinologist could help?

Hi all,

Well for the women it is likely perimenopause (meaning pre or around). Especially if you have never had children it can come pretty early. I had them and I will tell you what works (and part of this can work for men too marine vet). Buy yourself some flax seed capsules and take 2000 to 3000 mg (it's good for you anyway). That should really help (take them before bed). This eventually stopped working for me so now I also take an herbal hormone replacement concoction in which the main ingredient is red clover and black cohosh. And, these herbs don't work alone I still need the flax seed. So I now might sweat a tiny bit but even that is quite rare.

Good luck!

Amie

p.s. I just realized that I forgot to take the HRT last night but I did not get the sweats so the flax seed alone did it. And just know that my night sweats were exactly like you guys are describing.

Oh my God,

I am stressed now, I so hope that the reason I am having night sweats is not because I am pre-menopausal!! Yikes, I am only 25 and want children! My boyfriend and I have often joked about me going through the menopause, because of this sweating, and also because I "overheat" very quickly, getting too hot too quick, and then seeming to be unable to rid my body of the excess heat. It is like I keep it held against myself, anable to let go and cool down, even though my body does not need or want it. Actually I have not felt this effect for a while now, so maybe it has calmed down, for whatever reason; but, the night sweats continue.

The thing is I do not have any other problems with my reporductive system; well, none that I know of anyway. I am on the pill, and have been pretty none-stop for 8 years, so it's impossible to tell what my true periods would be like. The bleeding you get inbetween taking your packs of pills is like a period, but really it's a "withdrawal bleed", right? And that is always really light, barely noticable, with me. Even before I was on the pill, I had really, really light periods, and pretty much never had any period pain, and ceratinly no bad moods/bloating/PMS (or PMDD or whatever they call it now). I know I am really lcuky with this as I know some women suffer so much with their periods, and I never have.

But, I hope that that doesn't mean I am infertile!! That is so depressing. All I yearn for is to settle down and have a husband and children, even more than a career or loads of money or anything.

I read that it doesn't matter if your periods are heavy or light, just that they are regular, and that's how you tell how fertile you are. In other words, it's not the amount you bleed, just when it happens! And when you're on the pill, there is no way of knowing how regular you are, as the pill just formalises the whole thing and makes certain the withdrawal bleed is always at the same time. So how do you ever know??

Do you think I should go to the doctors and check I am not in an early menopause?? Maybe that could be part of the reason for my depression and anxiety too?? I am not sure they would believe me though. And I doubt they would put me forward for whatever tests they have to do unless they were quite sure there was just cause to so so....

I think I have gone on overdrive here, I do apologise....you know what it is like when you get a new idea that has not occured before, and you type as the thoughts are still coming...

Sorry for grossing out any men as well by talking about periods and stuff, but really, it's only a body, that's what I think, and so perfectly natural and just a part of life.

Anwyay, Amie, do you think I should be worried?

By the way, I already take Flaxseed as an Omega-3 suppliment, as it is a good source of Omega-3 for vegetarians like myself (no fish oil), and Omega-3 is really good for you, like you say. Essential for healthy brain function, healthy heart and joints too. So I am already helping myself somewhat here, although I take it in the morning and not at night, but I could switch.

Thanks for your help, let me know your views...I am probably jsut being paranoid!

Hi Heather,

I'm so sorry to have freaked you out. Remember that perimenopause is even earlier than premenopause, which means formal menopause could be a long way away. Also, maybe the reason you sweat is a different one but the flaxseed will help anyway. So take it at night and make sure it is at least 2000 mg. So really Heather you could be sweating because of one of your pills. Check them out on an info page. Also I have a motto (everyone should have at least one). "I am an old woman and I've had many problems, most of which never occurred." Worrying before knowing is just a waste of energy right? And it would be no use getting checked at the doctor's because unless you are completely menopausal the hormone difference is not reflected in your bodily fluids. Hope that helps.

Let me know if you are wondering anything else k?

Thanks Amie...

Sorry, I was just having a paranoid rant as usual....!

I just really want children in the future, and I don't want anything to destroy that

Love,

Heather

If you are really worried you can go to an endocrinologist and get a full workup, they can find out your hormone balance but to do it you'd have to go off the pill for a couple of months. Alternatively you can request that your ovaries be ultrasounded, to see if there are any obvious problems with them.

Thanks Ferengi,

Is an endocrinologist a hormone specialist? I know the endocrine galnds are something to do with hormones so I take it that one is.

I am not overly worried - I just go off on one sometimes, and end up thinking too deeply into things, and spiralling out of control..! - but I will keep your suggestion in mind.

I guess I have quite a few more years of child-bearing age left, it's just you hear so much about infertility these days, it's always at the back on my mind.

Thanks for your advice and info,

I've had night sweats for as long as I can remember (male). I informed my doctor when I was 13. I was then poked, prodded, and pushed from office to office for every test they could think of. After 5 years of that I had enough and gave up. They just kept saying it must be stress. I lead a nearly stress free life so I really doubt that call. 14 years later I still get the sweats at least once a week, usually every night. I sure wish somebody could come up with something to help. I hope you all have better luck than I have.

Hi manimal,

Why not try the flaxseed oil to see if that helps you? Also, I am sure there is a medication that can help because my dr. suggested I go on it when I told her about my night sweats and I said no thanks. I didn't want another medication especially since a) the night sweats don't really bother me and b) I can take care of it in other ways.

good luck!

Sage drops have worked well for night and daytime sweats for me. Mine are medication induced. Blood tests so far indicate I am not menopausal, but I realise because of my age, that this could begin any time soon. The drops, however, are not selective and have been reported to be of help in any kind of sweats.

Hi Fiona,

Do you just ingest the drops or put it in juice or something? That sounds interesting.

I take 15-20 drops in a glass of water. A very small glass of water, lol, sage has a very distinctive flavour.

Sage advice.
