I experience panic attacks and depression. I wonder if the anxiety causes depression or the depression causes anxiety. I take an antianxiety medication. I have taken several antidepressants but it seems that they cause me to have even more anxiety attacks. I don't know what to do anymore. My psychiatrist told me to take Saint John's Wort when I told him that I couldn't tolerate lexapro. Several years ago I took paxil and it helped but when I was prescribed it again I just became anxiety ridden. Does anyone have any suggestions? Lil |

Hi Lillyre,
I have anxiety and panic attacks too, along with my depression. Like you I wonder which came first, but I think the question is a futile one. Once the cycle has started it is a chicken, or egg thing.
I am not sure if Lexapro and paxil and St John's wort are the only things you have tried...but I know paxil increased my anxiety and suicidality and St. Johns Wort was useless for me...did nothing. Part of the problem with St. Johns Wort is there are no standardizations or regulations on how much of the antidepressant substance is in any given brand.
Anyways, It can often take numerous medication trials to get the right medication for you as an individual. For many people it takes a combination of medications to help them. I hope you keep talking with us and we will help you through the difficult task of finding the medication/s that help you. ...Aqua |

Hi,
I have the same and what really works for my anxiety is effexor and rivotril. I had gone off the rivotril and decreased my effexor recently and my anxiety came back with a vengence. I was taking ativan everyday (which works but is not ideal). So I switched back and now it's fine. Effexor is for depression and anxiety so I think it is a bit unique in that sense. Also, I think my zyprexa helps too. I often wonder if some of my anxiety isn't "rebound anxiety" from some of my meds because it seemed to get worse once I was on more medication. Amie |

Lately I think I've started having anxiety or panic attacks, but I'm not sure. Twice this week my heart began racing out of control, like I was afraid of something but I don't know what. Along with that I had a sinking feeling. Kind of a very unworldly, lonely feeling. I was really concerned that I might be going crazy. I thought about seeing a doctor but am more worried I’d just be put on some medication. I found a list of anxiety symptoms at www.selftherapy.org , which has calmed me down a bit as it's sounds quite like what I’m experiencing. Has anyone every tried that program? Or have any other suggestions? Does this sound like anxiety??

Hi Stress and anxiety,
I think you should go see a dr because it could be any number of things. Like, not to scare you but I think it could be something to do with the heart sometimes. When our hearts race we could feel weird at the same time psychologically even if it's a physical issue.
Or, it could be an anxiety attack. I have had that but never a panic attack. To my understanding, panic attacks are something that you would definitely recognize as the person thinks they are dying, quite literally. In any case get checked out so that you can have peace of mind. If you don't want medication say so and then see how it goes. You might not have another one. If you do then you can decide whether you want medication or not. Sometimes it doesn't take alot of medication to help a person so that is something to know. Anyhow take care.

I have depression with anxiety and panic. One thing that has really helped me with my anxiety and panic is a relaxation therapy group.
I took it for about 6 weeks. I couldn't believe how much more relaxed I felt. One thing it taught me is that I could control my anxiety and panic through diaphragm deep breathing. I had a hard time beleiving and accepting this at first.
I practised it though and found it really did work.
One thing they taught me was to find my trigger point.
This is the point where I am feeling a little anxious but not into a full blown anxiety or panic attack. Once I recognized this trigger point (my stomach - anxious feelings in my stomach) I can then start the deep breathing to control it. If I wait too long and get into a full blown attack then I can't control it. The key here is to recognize your trigger point and start the deep breathing. Trigger points can be different for every one.
One reason I had a hard time believing this and accepting this is because I have had anxiety and panic attacks all of my life . I thought that they controlled me and that I had no control over them. To realize I could control them was a slow process but I finally got it. I have to work at the awareness sometimes though.
It really works. The Relaxation therapy was throught my Mental health out patient clinic. The material the used was from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver BC. I don't know if you can access this material through their Psychiatry department website.
Hope this is of help to someone. I will try to find the material I was given at the time if anyone has any questions.

This is Sasha replying to my own Posting. I just reread it and I think I gave the impression that I was doing wonderful.
The truth is I don't know how I'm doing. I'm having a really hard time at work and am feeling really anxious and depressed about it. Starting to feel overwhelmed by the anxiety. I've been taking a break from counselling etc. But I think I need to go back. This really frustrates me. I don't know why. Actually maybe I do. My Psychiatrist left. Before he left we talked about him referring me to another one at the health center.
We also talked about me trying clonazepam. He also said he would put something in my file about needing support and time off of work because of the situation there. Then I found out that all he put in my file was that I wasn't suicidal. This really upsets me that he didn't follow through. It takes so long to get referred to a Psych. Now I'll have to go on the waiting list again. I feel like he really let me down. This all happened last year. What's taking me so long to get this sorted out? The lack of Dr.s here where I live. When I finally left my old GP no other Dr. in town was accepting new patients unless they had moved here. So I had to go to the walkin clinic to get my meds refilled. Finally after about 9 months one of the Dr's there said he would take me. I only saw him twice at the clinc and now once at his office. I'm running out of meds in another couple of weeks. I don't know if I should go to him before then or wait. (Lots of fear here!)

Every night I find myself suddenly awake in bed. Its very frustrating. I’ve become a semi-soniac. I usually cant sleep properly. Even if I do, I’m not well rested. Usually I get a lot of anxiety just by contemplating about my future. I just found the love of my life and things are going exceedingly well. But a part of me feels like the Murphy’s law of love: if its too good to be true then it must be too good to be true. Why cant I just go with the flow and not worry so much? I get constant pangs of depression. Then I stumbled upon this book that helped me deal with all my worries. It’s like a light at the end of long dark tunnel. I feel light and relaxed. It’s a life saver.
My boss told me I might land up the big promotion for which I have been working my butt off. But before that, I need to fly over to Denver head quarters to pitch in my great ideas to the board of directors. It felt like I was falling down in a well without knowing how to swim. All my life I have been scared about facing an audience. I panicked. I didn’t know how to deal with this. But now I know how to cope with my stress, depression without any hassle. It’s more about facing your fears and moving forward than letting you step down from the game. The amazing self realization techniques in the book helped me understand the unraveled power within me to take control of my life – to get back in the game. Now whenever I feel any depression, I try relaxing and talking positively to myself. This helps me! And I recommend it to anyone without thinking twice. so now i am attacking panic!

In my 42 years I have experienced in my opinion quite normally unexpected surge of anxiety. He has since repeated several times, but always it was a situation identical or very similar. The first time was about 3 months ago while riding full metro line C from station Florenc, I was going to Bud#283;jovická. In the main railway station I was overcome severe nausea - weakness, dizziness, surging diaphragm, dry mouth, feeling of suffocation, tingling in the extremities, reduced visual perception, fear that fall down and die, stress, urge to get away from the enclosure. Too late, the doors closed and the train continued to the museum. I did not run. I found the only place to sit, trying to breathe deeply, and waited to see if I survive. I did not know whether I'll be able to get up, but I had to drop out, and so it happened in Pankrác. Outside, I sat on the bench with no concept of time, wondering if I should call an ambulance because I'm dying. After about 20 minutes I tried to get up. At least another hour I kept finger on the button vytá#269;ejícím ambulance on a mobile phone. I walked home. This story scared me so much that I ordered the doctor.
