EMDR(eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) is a method that stimulates both sides of the brain so that you can access memories but also the emotions that went with them. You can use earphones and have tones going from one ear to the other or you can have things in your hands that vibrate or you can move your eyes between two points. You can even just tap your fingers. What you do is think of a memory , then do the EMDR for a few minutes (like 3) and let your mind just go and see where it takes you. Then you talk to the therapist about where it went. You repeat this for the whole session. Sometimes it takes a few sessions. The idea behind EMDR is that once you deal with an issue, it doesn't come back. I used it to deal with issues surrounding my divorce and my abusive ex-husband and it worked beautifully. I feel none of the animosity I used to feel when I think of him. It is often used for PTSD. That's it in a nutshell.

I used to visit a abuse survivor site where some members did emdr. Recently, I'm interested. Your post here reminded me. I have been cautious about trying it. I'm gathering info. (At the other site, one person said she felt emdr triggered a manic episode for her...but this one person is the only case of mania I'd heard of so far).
EA, I've never heard of it bringing on mania, but if you have sz and are really prone to hallucinations , the therapist might be a little reluctant to do it. I can't remember how many sessions I had. I would guess maybe 4, but that's only a guess. And that would be just one topic. I was seeing a psychologist at the time and she did it with me. I also know of a licensed counsellor who does it. I would certainly recommend it for anyone who has traumatic memories that they haven't been able to deal with.

My therapist suggested it. I had never heard of it until I started seeing her. There wasn't any extra charge for it , it was included in the cost of the session.
