I have just been diagnosed with bipolar 1 disorder a little over a week ago and also have extreme ocd/anxiety. My psychiatrist prescribed me abilify 2 mg and I had an allergic reaction and spent a day in the ER on fluids due to dehydration (I didn't sleep in 6 days even w/ sleeping medication, I couldn't eat w/o vomiting, hot flashes, and horrible headaches). Needless to say I have been taken off of this medication. To make a long story short I saw my psychiatrist this morning and he has decided to put me on seroquel. I don't have any form of insurance (I don't qualify due to preexisting conditions. I have PCOS (Poly cystic Ovary Syndrome) so I have to wait 6-8 weeks before my first prescription arrives to my dr (unless I want to spend $500 which of course I don't have! My psychiatrist covers all my meds). So currently I am on no medication b/c my dr wants to take care of one problem at a time just incase of side effects for each medication. I have been having relapse symptoms since I've stopped taking the abilify and I'm absolutely miserable! I have been having constant anxiety attacks due to the stress of having to deal w/ this new situation and I can still hardly eat. The dr at the hospital gave me 5 pills of ativan just in case, and I'm down to my last two (it's the only thing that will make me sleep). I guess my question is what can I possibly do to relax and relieve a little of this stress before I go absolutely crazy? I thought that getting help would finally make me feel better, but it has only gotten worse. Has anyone tried aromatherapy? Yoga? Any ideas or personal refrences would be greatly appreciated. It's gotten to the point where I'm scared to go to work b/c I'm not sure how I'll react. I keep having nervous melt downs! Thank you all! |

Welcome Tblanton to MT! I don't have any answers specifically regarding the Bipolar1. I might be BipolarII and have tried Seroquel so I do have a small experience with it. Many members have taken or take Seroquel so if you don't mind I am going to post your post in the most frequented forum here, the Community social forum. It shouldn't take too long to get some ideas, we are a great community of very caring individuals. I look forward to being of further help.

Hello tblanton1985,
Welcome to MT!
I am Bipolar I I think; my pdoc never specified. I am currently on Lamictal, Zyprexa, Saphris and Ambien. This is the 4th med change I had in six months. I am also taking fish oil to help with the mind.
I have a sister, who is bipolar I as well and she's only on Lamictal. She's the one told me about the fish oil how it is a good maint. plan for our brain/mind. and she's also doing Yoga. She's in a better shape than I am.
Hope that help!

welcome, this is my 2nd day here. I was diagnosed moderate bipolar a month ago after worst freak out ever, I was just put on lithium carb 600 per day 3 days ago. I feel for you, I also don't have health insurance and now diagnosed my bipolar is a pre existing condition. HAVE HOPE: There are county funded free if no income programs, at least in my state. After two freak outs my county place agreed that if it happened again to come in and they would hospitali_e me which includes meds.
I had just enough money to go to psychiatrist, on my own because very few thru county such a long waiting list, but even without insurance that did NOT cost $500. only $200 for 1st visit during which I got a prescription, after that its $100 per session, one in two weeks, then once a month. There were medical tests ordered which a college nursing clinic did for free. Then there are lithium level tests about every month which cost $30 each.
My county place was right next to hospital, and I get free counseling, so ask about income based mental health programs at hospitals near you for your county, also try searching the internet.
For relaxing there are several over the counter natural things available at Wal mart, CVS ect, but I AM NOT ANYWHERE NEAR A MEDICAL DOCTOR, OR EVEN A STUDENT, SO BE CAREFUL! Valarian is strong and relaxes, melatonin is what the brain uses to make you sleep. Triptaphane is in warm milk and makes you sleepy. Take lots of B vitamins they put you in a good mood, give you energy and are even in Tension Tamer tea, Chamomile tea (both at Wal mart)is calming too, as is the scent of lilac, clove and gardenia scent and just clove in tea is supposed to help bipolar. Lithium Orotate-is available over the counter at health food stores and one article said it can be used in very low doses and still be effective, said to take 10 to 20 mg per day as a preventative, you should research it though, and a medical doc told me is safest to go with what is prescribed to you. Good luck, I've been there, scared that each day will be worse. Keep me updated. |

Hey tblanton! Whenever I get struck with anxiety, I go the local rec center and run on the treadmill, or ride a stationary bike for 30min, followed by a dip in the hot tub, and then sweating it out in the sauna. It works wonders. Most recreation centers only charge like 5$ or 6$ for a drop in. Good luck!
Think of the exercise as dinner, and the hot tub as dessert. |
