I'm new to this site. I think it's great. I do have an issue if anyone can help me with. I'm bipolar. (first was diagnosed with depression 9 years ago). I went from being a Manager to an employee to now out on long term disability. This is really hard for me. I don't feel I am contributing anything. I try to stay near home (just leave to go to the gym and doctor appts.) as I have side effects from my meds. (tired, dizzy, vision issues, etc.). I don't know how I can feel better about everything. I don't have too many friends either. I wonder if I'll ever lead a normal life again.

Been there, done that, bought a tee shirt. A couple of things that seems to help me, one take a hot bath in tub with water as hot as I can stand. Submerge up to neck. It gets the mind on the heat and off the depression. One other thing that I do is try doing something where results can be seen. Wash dishes, mow yard, clean room & etc. Reading & watching TV is out, especially when racing thoughts are present. It tends to make me feel more worthless. |

Hi Gretchen
I'm going to tell you about my hubby. He used to be a big strong guy, the alpha male - worked in the oil fields and the whole bit. Slowly over time, fibre mialgia (sp?) ate away at this muscles until he lost most of the use of his arms, his legs, and his heart muscle was cramping. He couldn't work anymore so he thought that he was useless, worthless, and we would be better of without him.
This man who I love so much contributes to our lives every single day and there is not one of us out of all his family or friends that wouldn't grieve for years if we lost him. You see, he was mistaken. For years he thought his worth was in his work when all along, his worth was in his heart.
So remember that even if you're on disability, that isn't your identity, that's only your income. Your identity, who you are, is in your heart. And though you may not have many "in-person" friends, you'll find a lot of friends here.
As far as ever leading a "normal" life, what is "normal"? Because no two people are the same, you are already leading a "normal" life as much as anyone else is.
All the best - xyzcindy

Hi Gretchen, I would suggest continue going to the gym, it's so important to your well being. As far as your social life goes, have you considered volunteering with a group of your interest? |

Gretchen, I am new as well. I am actually in the same situation as yours, except that now I am 28 and have to move back with my parents. So, now I am trying to find ideas about how to deal with that: I began to crochet, painting (even if I am not really good yet...but it will come I hope). I am trying to think about to organize a space in their house where I could feel comfortable. I am luck though because they live in a sunny place. Sun is good for depression...I also have a lot of difficulties to connect with people...difficult in my field. so little break I do not know if it helps you in any way. Well, good luck, Katia

Dear GC, To give you another perspective, my newly diagnosed bipolar daughter has moved in with me, her father (and three grand children). First As a father it makes a huge difference when you know you are dealing with illness versus attitude. When you know this It makes you hang in there with them through thick and thin. I simply make sure she takes her meds daily, and keep the line of communication open. Other than that her life is hers to live, mistakes and all. When bad patterns and behaviors erupt, do not be to fast to jump in, (there gonna happen...get over it). She came to me in tears, and we then dealt with it, constructively and how she wanted me to help prevent her behavior in the future. So GC remember, you are not alone, you are LOVED and being prayed for every day."I'll tell her God...but she may not like it". |

The symptoms of bipolar disorder can hurt your job and school performance, damage your relationships, and disrupt your daily life. And although bipolar disorder is treatable, many people don’t recognize the warning signs and get the help they need. Since bipolar disorder tends to worsen without treatment, it’s important to learn what the symptoms look like. Recognizing the problem is the first step to getting it under control. |
