Hi,

I am a 32 female who lives in London. I take 150 mg of released venlaflaxine and the other night I had had several drinks at a friend's, of 12 years, new flat when I noticed something gritty in my mouth.

Eventually he admited he had put estascy in my drink and I was very upset and angry then my mood changed. He told me he did it as it may help in making me want to sleep with him. Later I just fell asleep and woke up several time to him stroking or touching me.

I have a boyfriend who I love very much but I can't understand why I let him touch me and I may have drunk too much but what would the "e" do with the other two things. I can't seem to find any info on the web so I was wondering if anyone here could help.

Many thanks
Alex

PS Sorry about the rubbish spelling!

Hello,

This was a really nasty thing this "friend" did to you!! It was pretty much an attempt at date rape!!

Don't feel guilty about your boyfriend; you were drugged and there was nothing you could have done to stop what happened happening. The ecstacy can make you lose your inhabitions and feel love towards those around you, but it sounds like from what you say you were just being touched by the bloke, and you yourself did not have much to do with it. It sounds pretty one sided and like he was seriously taking advantage of you. It was not so much a matter fo you "letting him touch you"; more a case of you were so out of it that you couldn't protest and therfore didn't have much option but to just let it happen. I am sure that even if your boyfriend knew, if he was told the full story, he would see that there was no fault at all on your part.

Actually quite a similar thing has happened to me before. The difference was that I took the ecstacy myself ( I used to take street drugs for recreation quite a lot in my younger days; not any more). I found that I was lying on the bed with my boyfriend next to me pretty much zonked out, and another guy there who I was just letting touch me! I was feeling so nice and floaty and euphoric that it didn't even occur to me that this could be wrong, and I didn't even feel guilty!! It just felt nice! I guess the ecstacy takes away your morals as well as your inhibitions!

In terms of the interactions between the three drugs in your system, they would probably just all make the whole experience stronger, reinforcing one another's effects. Venlaflaxine (however you spell it!) is an SSRI, so aims to increase the amount of serotonin circulating in your brain, and so improve your mood. Ecstacy also had this goal, though it's more of a sudden burst of serotonin (which is why you get a mid-week downer after a weekend on pills, because all the serotonin has been drained and it takes a while to re-establish production and the correct balance) than a control relsease (as with an SSRI). Alcohol also has a milder effect of elevating your serotonin levels. All these things in conjuction would have meant that you were pretty euphoric, almost entering a different form of consciousness (which is probably why you felt you were drifting in and out of sleep). You would have felt like you could take on the world and it wouldn't matter...or alternatively let this guy tough you although you love your boyfriend veyr much, and it wouldn't matter...! Also, I've read that the SSRIs can amplify the effects of other drugs, so the venlaflaxine could have made the effects of the other two stronger and made your reaction all the more intense.

Well, that's enough rambling, hope that helped.

I would seriously consider the motives of this other guy! Have you seen him since or discussed what happened at all?? It's all very well to take drugs when it is your choice - that's just what it is, YOUR CHOICE, whether to take or not to take - but he left you no choice, and this experience, which has left you questioning your own behaviour, was forced upon you.

I would not question your love for your boyfriend; you could not really be expected to be in control of your actions when so many drugs were rife within your body, causing such a strong reaction.

Best wishes,

Heather

Hi,

thank you for your responses. It means alot that you taken time out to write these useful and kind words.

My boyfirend has been really kind generally about this and came to the police station with me to report what the other guy did. I also forwarded this link to my boyfriend.

I want to try and come off the venlaflaine now so I am moving to 75mg form 150mg. This is the second time I have had a period of taking them and before I never realised how they can mess you about! After a year and a half it is rather scary but it can't be as bad as when a few months ago I tried going cold turkey and nearly COMPLETELY lost the plot.

I found a fairly interesting report on street drugs and prescribed drugs but it wasn't very detialed or corroborated with too much information.

Take care; I am now trying to practice what I preach even though I got rather drunk at my works annual dinner thing last night!
Alex

I like the post before me, think the dude did an awful thing to you. Taking alcohol with any drug muddies the water when trying to treat depression. My suggestion is to lay off the alcohol until off the SSRI. If you cannot leave the alcohol in the bottle, then you may need more treatment in another fashion.
