Dear Members,
If you have been treated with either divalproex sodium (Epival, Depakote) or valproic acid (Depakene, Valrelease), it would be very helpful if you could tell our community your answers to the following questions:
In the treatment of your Bipolar Disorder:
- Was valproate effective in decreasing your manic episode(s)?
Once you answer, you will be shown how our other members have answered. |

I took 1750mg of divalproex sodium daily for 5 years, with 99.9% compliance (I'd miss it maybe once every six months), in conjunction with 600mg of carbamazepine. In that time period, I did not have a single episode, and it was not used in conjunction with any anti-psychotics or anti-depressants in that period, as well. I did take 25mg of Seroquel hs, prn for sleep for a few years in there. At the time, I was also working towards better life choices, such as eliminating substance abuse, proper diet and sleep habits, a supportive network, etc.
I eliminated all substance abuse 4.5 years ago. I've been off both meds for 2 years. I came off both with a gradual downward titration under a psychiatrist's care in order to conceive my son. These would be the side effects I dx'd this med for, the fact that it is a Class X drug.
I am a very, very rare and fortunate unmedicated, stable bipolar. Prior to this, I was rapid cycling and had 13 admissions in 3 years, as well as dual diagnosis, with an eating disorder axis as well. I listened, finally, took the meds as prescribed, went to all appointments and took care of myself. It worked. |
