I went to my PDOC today upset about my weight gain yada yada yada, and he said basically ALL SSRI's will have the side effect of weight gain BUT he knows of this "new" drug that may help with my anxiety AND lose weight. It GEODON and seems to be fro schizophrenics. Has anyone here tried it or hear of it? He said it was in the family of Risperdyl and I hated that drug so any help would be greatly appreciated as usual!

When I started taking my risperdol at night instead of the daytime things improved- THEN my doc told me it's better at bedtime. Now I don't need to nap during the day and feel quite rested in the morning. In fact, for me it's been a terrific mellow drug. it takes off the "bottom" of the depression and smooths everything so the little things don't piss me off anymore. Hope this helps, kaz

Hi, I tried Geodon. It does make you lose weight, however, the reason you lose weight is because you are feeling sick to your stomach on a daily basis and don't feel like eating. I had horrible nausea and threw up at least one meal a day. It didn't happen right away though, it was after about a month & a half of taking it. At first I thought I got hit with a nasty stomach bug that I couldn't shake, (it lasted over a month) but then when I brought it up to my pdoc she said it was from the Geodon and immediately took me off it. Hope that helps

Respridal made me very sick, like the flu. I was sick for days until I went back on seraquol, then I got better real fast. I heard Topomax makes you lose weight, but I `ve never had it or Geodon. I think every person reacts differently to meds.

I had the same experience as Ddanea on Geodone. I did loose about ten lbs while taking it, but the side effects were so bad that I had to go back on Risperdal. I would wake up early and ready to go, but after about an hour I would feel sick and literally be unable to function. It made me 'zombified'...I couldn't sleep either. |

I take geodon and i love it. Every one is different. The only side effect i had from it was that morning hangover feeling for about 2 months. Now im fine and it works great. I gained no weight on it, but im also taking lamictal and that made me gain weight. |

Hi, I was on Zyprexa for 9 months and after this on Seroquel and I gained 90lbs in 2 years!!!!!I went on a diet, but I could only maintain my weight. I have been taking Geodon now for a year and was able to lose more than 20 lbs with Weight Watchers. Geodon doesn't make you gain weight (that's why I switched to it), but it's hard to ge off of it. I don't think Geodon is as good as Seroquel with my irrational thinking, but I rather take this than gaining even more weight. But I am taking the lowest dosage of Geodon there is: 20mg/day. Am aslo taking Xanax.
I am trying to get off of any meds now, because I'd like to get pregnant again. So, if anybody has any advice for me how to get off, let me know. It'd be much appreciated.

i pulled something to get myself in the hospital. i pretended to act abnormal to get in, really i was tramatized because i was sexually abused and stuff. they wouldn't even give me a chance to tell them what was wrong, nor would they test me, and put me on respridal and cogenton. as soon as that medicine went in me i felt awful inside. i felt like i lost my soul, myself, my life, my sight, my good old me. everything. after 2 years of not taking it, i felt completely handicapped. i was absolutely misrable already resting in peace but alive. it made me lose all my muscle. and before this i was training to be a stunt double. it hurt when i walked. i still can't scrub yucky dirt to make things clean. i can pull a muscle lifting something 5 pounds. eventually i took that awful medicine one night, i took 3o some pills and took them. i wanted to just die and relieve myself so bad. this feeling is horrid. it makes me so sick i wanted to actually give up on my dreams. i ended up going to a therapist or something. they said that i was on the wrong medicine. they wanted to damn put me on more medicine because i tried suicide. they say i have level 2 depression. i've been so fine without any meds. i dont take any right now. all i wanted was to hear that God would make it okay for me one day. but that medicine played with my head even more. and everyone blames me and blames me. i've been tramatized since i was 6 and i had ear tubes and a bad haircut for it while going to a priss school. and more stuff. like a negative family. my mom didn't like the color of my hair so i died it yellow to appease her. i hated that. and i felt like a britney spears wannabe. my lord. that medicine was just awful for me. i still feel the yuck in my throat every single day. but i just tend to my mind and soul and i feel okay. those doctor's just want people's money. self healing usually helps make someone better whether they are very ill or not. that's what the people need. know? i dont personally believe in medicine. just like supposedly my dad's dad. green tea and healthy foods and happy life. and that. and if i ever need medicine, i'm not even gonna take them, unless they are antibiodics, if i'm ment to die or something, then my time has come and there is nothing more to it. i dont know why you would want any medicine.. |

I definatelly disagree with wuwabee. If you had a bad experience with medicines, if they didn't help you, this doesn't mean that this is what will happen to other people as well. There are so many people that accually get much better because of meds. I will say my own experience. I was misdiagnozed and I too was put on the wrong meds which I think did to me more damage that help. But finally I was put on the right meds, and I was saved. I wish they had realized that I was pcychotic(and Bipolar) before and they had put me on antipsychotics. When I was put on zyprexa, my pcychotic symptoms disappear. It saved me for a lot of suffering and helped me reorganize my life. For me antidepressants didn't work, but the antipsychotic and mood stabilizers did. |

Geadon is one of the worst anti psychotics out there. But it does not cause weight gain. I'd be careful if I were on it, infact how about never taking any meds that your pshyciatrist prescribes. They are awful and really bad for you!

Hello. I tried Geodon when I first became psychotic. This means that I hadn't accepted it or the medicine yet, but I felt like it "numbed my head," so I stopped taking it.
Right now I'm taking zyprexa, lithium, and cymbalta to keep my psychosis and depressive levels even.
I say, don't knock it til you try it, but watch yourself and keep in contact with your doctor. If you notice any super weird side effects, or if you feel like a zombie. Respect what your body is telling you.
Also a note to wuwubee. It seems you haven't accepted pills into your life again. You may have to make a choice between your mental health and other things in your life. It's easier to just accept what life throws you.
I give you a challenge. Write everyday three positive things that have happened during that day. Even better write them here so we can cheer you on. (Post in this forum where you'll write them, so we can find them more easily.) |
