Is it true that antipsychotic meds can make you gain weight? Or is it antidepressants as well? I am on Seroquel and other medications and have always had that extra "hungry" feeling even after an hour or two of eating. I am trying to lose weight (even though I'm still of course, on the medications) and have lost a little. I have a long way to go. I'm trying on my own. I've tried different weight loss organizations, to no avail. I think because once I reach a plateau I get frustrated that I can't do it, and lose hope. I used to take Zyprexa which also made me very hungry as well. I was heavy as a child and weight issues are also important to look at because for me, it also runs in the family. So, I'd like to ask anyone whether its both anti-psychotic medications and antidepressants or some more than others, or what? I'm frustrated. Thanks.
I have been on Seroquel 200 mg. at night for a couple of years. I had gastric bypass surgery over 6 years ago and was maintaining my weight until I started on the seroquel. I have gained approximately 60 pounds because I cannot seem to curb my cravings -- always feel hungry. You definitely should monitor your weight if that is a concern before it gets away from you like it did for me.

Hi lauraand33, and welcome.
I agree with what you're suggesting about weight monitoring. I was under my target weight for my body frame prior to increasing my Seroquel, and now that I've been on a regular dose of Seroquel for awhile, I just went and weighed myself and I'm a little bit over my target weight.
I'm 31. I've always taken for granted that I have a high metabolism (I'm often extremely anxious which eats up lots of energy)...and now with the Seroquel I've been eating even more so no doubt I will keep on gaining unless I taper back some and do more walking.
I was on Zyprexa and I gained about 12 kilos. My wait raised very fast because of the cravings, but later I tried to be on a diet with little effect. Before zyprexa I used to loose wait very easily when I was on a diet. With zyprexa it seemed that the kilos didn't go away thought I was on a diet. So I guess that Zyprexa must have influenced my metabolism. Now I have stopped zyprexa and I lost 4 kilos. I am still on lamictal and Trileptal but it seems that they do not influence my wait condition.
