hi im a mother of a 16 yr old daughter who was dx as bi polar/tendencies of schizophrenia. basicly it started when she was a small child...she was always angry..we went through counselors (5 or 6) we could never figure out why she was angry..she would go from being happy to being just plain mad. the older she got the angrier she got. she was jealous of her sister which i couldnt understand. her dad got injured on the job about 8 yrs ago. she has gotten progressively more angry over the last few years. her father and i got divorced 2 yrs ago(because of his lieing and getting her to lie to me)at this point she was really angry with me because i was the one who filed for the divorce. she has gotten worse since then...she cusses everyone out when she isnt happy with something doesnt go her way, she has been cruel to her grandparents( they are the ones who have been there for her and done things for her and love her dearly) but she dipises them. they will talk to her and take her places when im not there but other then that they wont and dont want to have her around, dont get me wrong they love her dearly but cant tolerate the way she hurts them verbally. this past july she decided she wanted to live with her dad and i said thats fine i didnt have a problem with it..then in august it was time to start school. she tried to commit suicide by taking a handful of pills luckily it was only bextra(for arthritis pain) but when i called poison control the wouldnt let me off the line until i told them a name and said if i didnt go to the emergency rm they would call for a ambulance(well i dont have insurance on her so i took the lesser of the 2)when i walked into her room that night i saw that she had 2 choices to choice from on suicide.. frankly im happy she took the pills instead of the knife..i wouldnt have been able to take any of that scene. i had to take her straight to a therapist when we left, they wanted to take her to a hospital but she was still a minor.so we went and she talked but didnt do any good..i finally got her in to see a psych doc. and she put her on abilify. at that time also found out she heard voices telling her which type of suicide to go with. u see i had no clue that she heard voices. i now realize that could have been why she was angry when she was a child. they scared her and she didnt know what to do. anyways, well she ended up moving with her dad and he said she was doing fine with out it and took her off of it. she moved back to me in nov. i got her back in to a doc and got her on i think it was remeron. and that didnt work. so we tried risperdal. that worked for a while but had made her extremely sluggish and tired all the time. so she is back on abilify plus prozac. for the time being it helps but who knows from day to day what will go wrong. she doesnt see her psych doc till aug...unless for somereason something goes wrong. she has gotten where she likes the counselor she is seeing now and goes 1 a week. with just her attitudes and ups and downs daily...she is driving me crazy..i feel like im by myself. i dont know if anyone in my family who are close understands what is happening or going on. sure they see the angry fits or crudeness or rudeness. but its a 24/7 thing. they dont see the way she is constantly by my side. its like she is afraid i wont be there if she is not beside me. if she is at her dads she constantly calls. i have a whole list of things to complain about but i dont want to wear anyones eyeballs out..lol...honestly im ready for her to graduate high school and to move out on her own but im afraid that isnt going to happen. i dont really know where i have gone wrong or what did i do. i myself is on antidepressant zoloft. and so is my mom. there are mental illness on my side of the family and also her dads but her dad has never been dx. im positive he is bi polar. she tells him he needs to be seen but he wont. i think that is what caused our marriage to break up. but u know its my guess only. i feel like i dont have a life at all. i try to give her as much freedom as possible and make her have responsibilty but it just doesnt work. how am i suppose to let her start driving and going out with her friends for sat, nights. i dont know if i have really realized what all of this is about. i dont think im denying it but i know i just dont understand it. i dont want to see her go in a hospital but im thinking it may help...i feel like im not a very strong person at all. but considering all i have been thru...(by my self) yes i am strong. just a little weak sometimes. well i think i have typed enough. if anyone would like to chat with me here is my yahoo and mess im name just add me....rx2rich on both sites. i would like some in put on somethings i have talked about. and how parent(s) are coping with something like this..please help just alittle it would be greatly appreciated or some good sites i can look at ..thanks for reading this....rx2rich  |

Hello. I'm not sure where to start, but I can say I completely understand what you are going through. My son was abused by his biological father about 3 years ago. Well to make a long story short my current husband and I have been on a roller coaster with my son. He just turned 7 April 16th and has been in a long term mental hospital since January. I miss him so much, but before he went there we got the run around with doctors, doctors, and more doctors! He has been diagnosed with bipolar, but it took him taking off early in the mornings and prying open my husbands locked in gun case for him to take his break barrel to school, fortunatly it was not loaded. Anyways it was this that made the therapist he was seeing realize what we were dealing with and that he needed more than outside patient therapy! I could type all night to tell you we didn't have much of a life for about 3 years either, but i would ware your eyeball out also lol. We have had to move alot because of people living around us treating us differently. I couldn't even let my children play outside without a parent coming to my house telling me something he had done. We were some much as to say outcasts!. Anyways the only advice i can give you is maybe it would be wise to put her in a facility for little bit to not only benifit you, but her also. She may be negative towards you at first, but it could really change your lives! I'm really scared for my son to come home, but the only thing we can do is to take it one day at a time. Hi, I just want to let you know that now looking at what you say that you are going through with your daughter, my parents went through and are occasionally going through with me. I tend to have more than one state of mind and I feel myself loosing control but it's like I don't have control of the change. You are going to have to be there and support her but the suicidal times, I've actually tried about 18 or 19 times and one was close enough for me. I've tried overdosing, slitting my wrists, and many other different techniques. Gladly, none worked. I wish you the best but it's going to take time, effort, concern, and love. I gained my disorder through my genes. SO, being around new things also trigger my swings. Things that I feel aren't supposed to happen, or if they don't go my way. I'm stubborn, spoiled, and very sneaky, But I enjoy it because I get my way. I was diagnosed as being Bipolar at the age of 12 and I'm now 18 and it's to the point where my mother is afraid for me to move out on my own, so when I do make a comment about it. She threatens that I'll be put into a mental institution. So I mean just look out for her, it'll pay off.

You have just described my life for the past five years. I had to take a year off work last year to help take care of my 16 year old daughter and keep her in school. She called me up to 7 times a day to come get her from school. I often went and sat with her in the closet of the band room, with her head in my lap. Many of her teachers did not understand that she wasn't the typical dramatic teenager exaggerating for attention. I got regular letters from the District Attorney about truancy and excessive absences, which I ignored. She was constantly afraid when she was away from me. If I was 5 minutes late picking her up, I must be dead. When she was with me, she almost always had to be touching me. I had no life outside of her.
She has been in the hospital twice, attempted suicide with pills four times, has been a cutter since seventh grade, has gained and lost 40 pounds over one year due to medication (she's been pregnant at her high school for the past two years), OCD, bulimic, ..... She sabotages anything good that happens to her because she is afraid it will end badly anyway. She also had two voices for at least a year. One was telling her bad things to do, the other one was auditory and visual and was trying to kill her.
There is hope, however. My daughter doesn't like feeling angry all the time and out of control. She has gotten much better with Abilify, Risperdal, and Lexapro. She works very hard to follow the rules, takes her medicine (which is locked up in the closet), and does not want to go back to where she was mentally before (no more voices or terrified paranoia. She recognizes the progress she has made and wants to continue to get better. We are in a down cycle right now and have to intensify her therapy.
I started writing this to help you feel better but it seems to have turned into a rant on my part  . Just know that you are not alone. There are many of us out here with the same daughter at home. We just keep going every day, praying they will mature enough to take care of themselves one day. Good Luck and hang in there. You'll both make it! |
