Causation.. The causes of depression can be stimulated from all aspects of life starting at every age. From the first feelings of stumping ones toe as a toddler, feeling pain sensation, to coping with a loss of a loved one who was there and gone the next as a child with not understanding why they are not here today. In childhood phase would mark each persons capabilities with how each person is capable of coping. Trauma, car accidents, loss of a limb, to losing a job or a friend or even a letter one has cherished from an old friend. Growing up is hard. The lessons in life is harder. The plate each is given might not be as full as others. Some has sadness while others experience joy. Then it is reversed. Just as technology improves, as economical housing and living conditions improve as well as physical health, mentality will improve. Cures will develop and pain will end as hardships for each family ends as the abuses end in each family creating a whole new society. One must believe because by one person believing in that it will spread positives like a infection removing a bad infection, ending the depression in the United States. And its ok for me to believe that. I am allowed to believe in Santa clause. I am allowed to believe in a better future if not for us, but for our children to come. -The End- |

Interesting, but I think it has something to do more with our reaction, and the learned reactions based on those around us.
Just as we learn language as young babies, we also learn how to react to negative situations.
I know people that have been hurt over and over again, yet by some means aren't seemingly depressed. They rise above it, and sometimes I wonder how. They get sad at times, but it's not a long lasting sadness, and suicidal dreams.
I mostly have my depression under control. I'm refining my mind everyday, as I catch myself going down those paths I don't like, or that don't do me any good.
Be well, George |

I think some of it is reactions and stimulations, but some of it it very likely to be how our minds think of a situation... I was taught to think of things on the bright side, but my mind wouldn't let me... that's the difference, I think

Speaking out is the first step. Depression can be cured in one minute. Thats fact. Like my depression arises from being forced to do something I morally would never willing do. Once that person is forced to stop forcing me to do or except that my children are not in my life I'm cured. Take them away I can't breathe, I want to fade away, nothing in life is more important then sharing my life with them. So in general lots of people are forced to do things they don't want to do. So if one had full control to control there life and happiness the mental rate would decrease. |

I was just reading about causation of bipolar disorder. Identical twins are more likely to both be bipolar (43%) than are non-identical twins (6%). Having a parent with major depressive disorder results in a 25% chance of a child having a severe mood disorder. I think it's clear that genetics have a lot to do with developing mood disorders. But, obviously something else is at work, too. My mom is an identical twin and has depression. Her twin sister does not. Their personalities are also different - my mom is uptight and my aunt is laid back. They've been that way as long as I can remember. I think that something in my mom's personal makeup made it harder for her to deal with some traumatic events, all but one of which my aunt also experienced. I think mood disorders are a matter of nature and nuture, not nature versus nurture.

i agree with MEADHBH about the whole "Having a parent with major depressive disorder results in a 25% chance of a child having a severe mood disorder." it took me 20 years to realize that my mother was mostly the cause of my bouts of depression. Not directly, as in something she did would make me depressed, no its from watching her struggle unsuccessfully with her own that, as a child, i learned to copy. My younger brother is even worse, he's been more extroverted than I have and sought help (also unsuccessful)
Without getting too much into that, my main question is, once you know the cause of the core of your depression, does that help? or does it make it worse, to know why you are feeling so bad but can't help it? The only thing that helps me is to stay away from my mother. Sad but true, i moved across the country and only see the family at christmas if possible. And when i do see her, i fall back into her patterns of self-loathing and go into a funk, it breaks my heart that i have no other solution. I feel so selfish, someday i hope that i can help her? put up with her? for now, she pulls me too deep and i'm not strong enough to figure out how, i've sort of tried but shes too stubborn. and now that i've been away for 5 years i have grown and evolved almost past my old habits and problems, it feels great to be away from her (she really is a nice lady though, from a distance). Anyone have better stories or solutions on how to confront or deal with your 'cause'?

Hi nuwanda, I love my mother with all my heart and I always live close to her. She has always been alone and sad. I see her almost every day and avoid all conversation if I can other than a kiss and hug. I understand a little about my unbreakable pattern of trying to be loved by my mother. So knowing this small truth about me does not seem to change anything. It just makes me sadder and she keeps getting sadder. I'm definately in the 25%.
My last good relationship ended by him telling me he needed a more nurturing person taht he did not feel intimate with me. I was devastated as my condition allows!!!! But the truth hurts!!!!!! Growing up IS hard. S |

i know what you mean yogx. im curious what you think would happen if you move farther from her. would you feel happier? would she have anyone else to visit her or does she depend on you a lot? i think i would feel worse about avoiding my mother if my brother weren't there doing what you are doing, visiting her and stuff. I still feel really guilty alot, that i should be helping her get better |
