Any parents out there taking Seroquel as needed?
PDOC recently suggested this, but I am afraid it will simply knock me out to the point I won't be able to awaken should the kids need me in the middle of the night...
They are having somatic issues dealing w/the recent parental seperation, and nightmares are one of the things I'm dealing with at the moment. So I can't be comatose for hours on end!!
I'm treatment resistant and have failed more drug trials than I care to remember. Something's gotta give, but most importantly I need to be able to function for my galz, as well as go to work every day.
BTW -- Seroquel was offered when I asked for a small quatitiy of low dose clonazepam. From past experience, I know that benzos with long half-lives are effective without rendering me unconscious. But PDOC saw my request as "drug seeking behaviour" (even though my last Rx for a total of 30 pills was back in 2003!!)
Sometimes I feel that I'm only prescribed the newer high-cost meds since I have decent insurance. Not complaining about my coverage, just the options I'm presented with.
Insight is appreciated!

I was on seroquel and zyprexa at the same time and I was out cold most all the time. Stopped the zyprexa, and the seroquel still made me a zombie. Not sure if it was the dosage or just the meds themselves. I'm like you, I'm either resistant to the meds, or I can take them for awhile then become resistant. Usually I'll just get to a point where I can function half way, then the reistance kicks in, and it's another 6 months of being off the wall til something else works.
I have 2 boys...13 and almost 15. They don't need me at night as much as younger kids would, but I still don't like being nearly unresponsive. That's when I'm able to sleep at all.
Can you find another PDOC? Automatically assuming that you are "drug seeking" really isn't the way to a trusting and conflict free relationship. I think you have something there though, about some of the PDOCS pushing the really spendy meds. I often wonder if they get kickbacks.....
I hope things are looking up for you, and that you've been able to come across a medication that will do what you need it to.

I didn't use Seroquel as a PRN but as a main med. I was on 800 mg. I found that after a while I got used to it and it didn't knock me out so bad, but you're right in the beginning I probably wouldn't have heard my daughter either if she would have needed me. |

800? whew! I'm not worthy
The first time I tried it I took 100, felt like I took a Quaalude for a while, then crashed about an hour later and quite lethargic and somnolent for most of the next day, and I weigh 250lb and have a high tolerance for drugs (or so I thought!)
I am now on 50mg qhs of Seroquel. For me, this seems just about right, but I do take a rather large amount of Depakote too, plus a benzo qhs (Ativan or Klonopin.) Actually, I think I will soon need to increase to 100 to have the same effect. It effects different people differently.
I won't speak for your pdoc but I'm sure he/she will start you off at a relatively low dose and "titrate" you up until the desired clinical effect is achieved. I would definitely mention your concern to him/her though. Try the lowest dose possible at first, say 25-50mg. While at the pharmacy, get a good pill splitter if you don't already have one. The tablets are not "flat" but have a slight oval shape, plus there is not score line. It is not uncommon to get 100, 200, or even 300mg tablets and be told to split them (they get them cheaper that way) although they do come in tablets as small as 25mg.

The seroquel will knock you out.
From what I understand it is not prescribed as an as needed drug in larger doses. I take 600mg at night w/ my other meds (300 topamax, 150 effexor) anything less than 7hrs sleep and I am what I consider non functioning for 3 or 4 hrs, and continually fall back asleep no matter what. 8hrs sleep and I am fine I do not take my seroquel If I have my granddaughter overnight (2 1/2 months old) which totally screws up my meds, and I don't sleep at all. NO I WOULD NOT TAKE IT WITH YOUR GIRLS. The county jail uses 10mg doses for sleep aides for inmates (a friends son told her this but 100mg did nothing for me. I would have an issue with a doc who thought I was just looking for drugs. Is he a new doc for you? or Is there a past history he is looking at? I'm not trying to be insulting just looking for his reasoning. If not, I would look at other docs. I recently took clonazepam instead of my seroquel when I had to have my granddaughter for a week and functioned fine I didn't seem to have any disruption In my mood cycle. When my doctor originally switched me off clonazepam, I never asked why. I hope this was helpful. Again I didn't mean to insinuate anything. Klee / kItlee2

Hi,
I take 400 mg at night and I am a single parent to a 15 year old girl. I just found out via "MySpace" postings from her friends that they were, not only out on the roof of our house, but the cops came by too. (Don't fret too much, although we live in a story and a half bungalow, her upstairs room is over a very small "alcove" in the dining room. They go out on that little roof and sit to see the stars--or traffic depending on the time of night.) And to think, I put her in the upstairs room so she wouldn't sneak out at night anymore!
Yeah, Seroquel knocks you out.
I wonder if I talked to the cops or if they just drove by? Hum, I wonder if they would tell me if I called the police station? We do live in a small town.
Psyc Dr. doesn't think Seroquel at night for me is a problem--it's important that I sleep. I wonder if he has a 15 year old daughter? |

I was on trazodone for 6 months for a sleep aide, stopped taking that because it would knock me out and I would not wake up if a freight train ran through my room. I then tried klonopin and that made me tired all day and still didn't sleep well at night. My pdoc just pt me on 50 mg seroquel, I slept "normal" last night but still feel extremely tired today, Let me know who it works out for you, I may be changing again!!!! I also take 1500mg lithium and 5-6 xanax per day maybe one of them is causing it!!Good Luck |

Hello and welcome.
I take 125mg/day Seroquel: -25mg 7:30am -25mg 12:30pm -25mg 5:30pm -50mg 10:30pm
Typically, I don't feel all that drowsy over the course of the day, especially if I get out walking and occupy my mind somehow. I do drink a cup or two of coffee here and there to perk me up.
Again, welcome to jattitude74 and skipper24. -EA

I am a mother of an 11 yr old boy, and I take Seroquel. I was also on a benzo (Xanax) but my body built a resistance to it over time. I now take 100mg qhs and I sleep about 8-9hrs at night. Actually i've never slept so good in my life. I won't take a higher dose because i'm doing well on a low dose. If my son wakes up at night I jump out of bed immediatly, it seems if he's sick or anything I will focus , it's automatic, probably because i'm on a low dose. Anyway i'm doing great and it does stabilize my mood. My body does not seem to develop a resistance to this and I take it every night.

Hello everyone, Seroquel continues to work for me to quell my paranoia and pull me together. I saw my pdoc just recently, and we upped my dose. I now take 200-275mg per day or more if I'm feeling manicky. My doctor tells me this is still a very low dose for the drug.
-EA p.s. I don't have children, but I just thought I'd offer up my experience on it...(Noises do wake me up and then I can go back to sleep)

Hello, I just found this web site. I hope with more education about Bi-Polar and productive habits; I can develop a successful life, even though I have this disorder. One shrink says I have Bi-Polar type one, another says type two. I think I have Bi-Polar XP edition, most of the time things kind of work, but not that great. Then about every six months I have to call tech support because of a depressive crash or manic burst. I have built up a resistance to Zoloft over the last four years. Apparently Seroquel is his next choice. I am also on Lamotrigine. He is building that up slowly because of some kind of evil rash you can get if you react to it. Reading about Seroquel, the sleepiness and weight gain is just another thorn in this never ending briar patch of Bi-Polar, so much for weaning me of Coca Cola. I am a runner and practice Hatha Yoga, when I am not slacking off; hopefully that fights any weight gain. I don't want to become a drugged out zombie or God forbid get Tardive Dyskinesia. I'm 35 and just trying to put together a life. I hope you have some insights for me.
Sincerely, A.C. P.S. I do have a Miniature dachshund; she has been the best therapy for me so far.

Hi, I was just given a trial of Seroquel to try for 8 days. My doctor told to take it one to two hours before I normally go to bed which for me is about 10pm at night. So I started it and took it between 8pm-8:30pm and at about 9:30 I found myself getting sleepy, but I was able to go to sleep where In my case I hadn't been able to go to sleep and stay asleep for more than two hours takeing Ambien. So this Seroquel helped me sleep and Im still in my trial of it. It also helps to calm the mind down so you can get rest. I want you to know that you will wake up like at 8am in the morning and be rested if you took it like I did. Dont take it at 3AM and expect you'll get up in the morning. I also want to tell you that I got drymouth takeing it so have some water where you sleep. Im not only takeing this med to try it I have been on Depakote for about a month and a half. |

I just wanted to reply to what you are takeing. My doctor has just started me on a low trial dose of Seroquel 50mg. I am also takeing Depakote about 500mg. Since I could not swallow that big oval pill It was broken down for me to 2 oval pills three times a day. The Seroquel seems like it helps me to go to sleep but it just keeps me sleep for an extra 2 hours. I had taken Ambien before this and it only had me sleep for one hour and I was up again. At least I can get some rest with the Seroquel IF I take it an hour to two hours before my normal bedtime.. I go to bed at 10pm so I have taken it at 8pm or 8:30 Im up and rested in the morning... I can at least sleep thru the night for once. Lucky7 |
