I have been taking Dogmatil for 20 years at 100mg twice a day for depression symptoms. In addition I take Rivotril 0.5 mg twice a day to deal with Writer's Cramp. I am now able to function quite normally. However, my doctor told me Dogmatil is an old medicine so that it may be replaced in the near future. So, I am asked to take Risperidone 0.5 mg to gradually replace it. Now I am asked to withdraw 50mg Dogmatil at night.
I would be grateful to my doctor if I can withdraw Dogmatil. I really do not want to take it lifelong. Also the doctor said it accelerates the development of 'elderly brain's disorder symptoms, e.g. forgetfulness'(Sorry, I don't know the name of this illness in English but the meaning is like this.) when I am as old as 60 years old.
However, I am afraid I have already got addicted to this medicine(dependent?). If I forget to take it, I will be forgetful about what I should do or to recall something. For example, if I see my old friend, I know I know him but I am unable to call his name. I will also be doing or speaking something wrongly. For example, I want to put some washing powder into the washing machine but I will 'carelessly' put some rice in it because in the same cabinet the two items are placed next to each other.
Please kindly tell me if I can really take Risperidone to replace Dogmatil gradually. My only concern is if I can function normally.
