How would someone go about getting a loved one to at least allow a diagnosis? She has a bipolar sibling who has been diagnosed and being treated, one parent being treated for severe depression, anxiety +++, one parent never diagnosed to my knowledge, but I believe to have obsessive-compulsive disorder (but I’m no doctor). I have requested get an evaluation and she won’t even discuss it including your web based diagnostic checkup. I have even gone as far as to request that our child her and I all get evaluated, so she would not feel singled out. She can have quick mood changes, anger quickly and not forgive, is quick to hate and hold a grudge which can last forever. She has even disowned a family member as well as thrown close friendships away and refused to associate in any way with the individuals without a just cause. She is very forgetful unless it is something she doesn’t like and is angry about and that she will share and talk about regularly with many people. She has several pet peeves such as if someone clears their throat too much, she would say something to that person or give them the look, get mad and leave the room. She drinks excessively and sometimes (once every three or so years) when she has heard enough people mention it, she will quit completely for a month or so (at least I think she has stopped), to prove that she is not an alcoholic. When she is drinking she is sometimes overly emotional, sometimes angry and physical, sometimes very sexually charged. She is overly flirtatious with others, even though she is married (not sure how far she may have gone, but I do know she has put herself in the position to go much further than flirting while intoxicated). I have been referring to my wife as you have likely already surmised. Our child is following her lead and I am very concerned. I see it as copycat and learned behavior not necessarily an imbalance of some kind (there may be some mild occasional depression nothing abnormal), our child young and already is overly flirtatious, quick to anger, tells friends about being bipolar (I believe that may have come from hearing mom have discussions about her sibling, as I have personally never used that word in a conversation). I am the newest enemy, who she has made it clear that she wishes to completely destroy even if it means fabricating stories and involving our child in the attempt to validate her behavior and alienate our child. My skin is pretty thick and it angers her more that she does not get an aggressive reaction from me, which steadily increases her alienating behavior aggressive and deceptive attacks. I do not hate her in any way and know I never could; actually I have never been able to hate anyone, thank God. But I am just very concerned for our Childs wellbeing and would like to see my wife, whether she is my wife or not, be able to acknowledge her extreme behaviors, seek care and live a happy productive and fulfilling life. I want our child to grow up with the proper role models and mirror the positive things and deal with life’s challenges with thought and care and to never act in a judgmental non caring way. So am I the one with the crazy idealistic desires or is there some way to get through to my wife before our child ends up at the wrong place and my wife so she wont hastily destroy future relationships.

Hi Filo,
I have a similar problem with my mother she has bi-polar disorder but doesn't acknowledge it even though she has been sectioned twice and received ect treatment, she is also very fanatical and abusive and most of the family don't want anything to do with her. Is there any family members who could help her? She probably doesn't listen to you because you are her equal and she doesn't like to be undermined, but she may listen to an older relative who she has respected for along time? I can't really help you because the mental health services only help if the person is willing or is a threat to themselves or the public. Because you have a child the social services may help you. it depends how much you can cope with too if she is so bad that it affects the child and you, I would suggest thinking about the child first and foremost and whats best for her. you would have to tell me more i don't want to give you bad advice
i'm Ros by the way

Welcome to our community Ros and Filo!
I am bipolar and will answer from the "inside" point of view. Even though I have been the one seeking help from the beginning...
But this is how I see it: a bipolar person (when in the hypo or manic phases) consideres themselves a "God". So it just does not make sense to have somebody else tell them what to do! (I hope I'm wording this right and it makes sense to you) because they know it all!
So, it is important to find a way of making her think that SHE had the idea of looking for help... maybe use her love for the child (if she does care more for the child than herself as mothers usually do) to have her prove to the world that she does NOT have a mood disorder and that she is and will be a great parent... And once she is there... things will take its natural path (just make sure that the consultation is with a mood disorder specialist because you'll probably won't have a second opportunity)
This is just an idea. I know that being deceitful is not noble but if it is a way to make her "decide" to go to a mental health professional, I guess it would be ok.
Hope this helps, awcasey.

My mother is 59 years old an has been diagnosed with BP for all of my life and will not accept her diagnosis. The help I can give you is that the first response is right on the dot, I have to lie a lot in order to get her help when she is either manic or mixed and not taking her meds. I wish you all the luck in the world. Many people do not understand that lies are not always bad. |

without doubt the key is to get your wife to speak to a professional by any reasonable means. Like your family there are many individuals in mine that have mental illness and some are very much in denial to the detriment of themselves and everyone around them. You're not alone. Try and act soon for the sake of your daughter. |

Have you talked to a professional yourself? Maybe he/she could give you some advice, including legal advice, on how to get your wife to at least get checked out. Is she close to her sibling and parent who are being treated for bipolar disorder and depression? Maybe they could talk to her. I know your original post is months old, but I do hope that things are getting better for your family.

Hi Mead, and everyone, I have tried many times to talk to a Doc or Nurse on my Moms behalf, Two things happened, Nothing, or things were made worse. (She noticed Doc acted differently with her) Any way, I give up, I just take care of my own problems now. Hugs, Lynn
Note to self: ask God what His plans are, for me, for the day. . |
