Lamotrigine is an anticonvulsant medication which is licenced for the maintenance phase of Bipolar I Disorder to delay the time of occurrence of mood episodes (mania, depression or mixed episodes) in patients treated for acute mood episodes with standard therapy. Its effectiveness in the treatment of acute mood episodes has not yet been established. There is a FDA warning that lamotrigine may (very rarely) cause a life-threating skin rash.
