I sleep 12-14 hrs a night, since I've been on 10mgs of olanzapine. This dose has been cut down from 15mgs. Will this eventually lesson, because I miss enjoying the sunshine during the day? By the time I get up and brush my teeth it's late afternoon. I don't know if my doctor will prescribe a lower dose. He said he could prescribe another drug, but I like taking olanzapine, save for the long sleeping side effects. Any comments or help would be much appreciated. Thank you.
I don't know if it will lessen for you. I have had experience with Olanzapine. I would go to sleep within 15 minutes of taking it and sleep for 9 hours and then get up. I would be sedated throughout the day. For the entire year I was on it the impact didn't lessen. I started on 15mgs and they decreased it to 10mgs because I couldn't stay awake properly.
Currently I am on Geodon - but I keep Olanzapine on my night stand for evenings when I can't get to sleep and it tends to knock me out.
Some questions for you - have you tried using an alarm clock and just making yourself get up.
There are drugs you can take which wake you up. But they have their own side effects and I think one should minimize the amount of drugs that you put into your system.
People on this site hate Geodon so I am loathe to promote its use. It has terrible withdrawal symptoms. A story for you. I was on 80mgs of geodon at night and I switched to 40 mgs at night - and I got withdrawal symptoms. I couldn't sleep and I developed permanent insomnia. I was expecting my sleep to return to normal after a couple of weeks but it didn't. Now I have to be ready to take something to help me sleep if I have trouble.
But for the record taking Geodon in a night time dose will not make you tired during the day. And you won't over sleep. I think if you are going to look at other options Abilify might be safer for you and it is also an activating drug like Geodon is.
But someone who is on Abilify should probably tell you more about it.
Zopiclone (Imovane) works well for me.I take 3.25 - 15 mg depending.
I used to take Zopiclone. I still have some in my room. My problem with getting to sleep was linked to racing thoughts and anxiety at night. So Z wasn't helping too much with this. It does work though for general insomnia.
Seroquel was a good drug for me I was on it for five years until I started to get tardive dysconesia (sp?) I'm on Abilify now and it seems to be a good drug too but it usually takes a couple of months for side effects to show up I've only been on it a few weeks I wonder what they'll be.
I have been on Abilify for over a year at 30 mg. I haven't had any complains.. it controls my mania pretty well, and I take it at night time. I am also on Lamictal 300mg. Just with these two I would have no problem with my sleep patterns, but I have insomnia. So, my p-doc puts me on Ambien 10mg, which puts me to sleep 10-12 hours.
