When I was in high school I saw a psychologist who sucked big time. (I'm trying to be polite). And I got meds from my family physician. I was on Lexapro and Focalin (for ADD). I never saw a psychiatrist thank goodness and God. I have had horrible experiences with Psychiatrists. They are manipulative, coercive, and overly aggressive. I have suffered hard emotional abuse from my time with them. I had much better experience discussing issues with my family doctor.
So I would recommend going to a family doctor for meds and therapy. However, I don't know about all the rules of medicine, so I'm not sure if a general physician can prescribe meds such as anti-psychotics. It is true that general physicians cannot give out all the meds in the world, and sometimes a specialist is required.
I give family physician as a therapist a thumbs up.
