I don't know how many here have ever dealt with delusions and bipolar, but it is becoming apparent that it is rampant in MY illness. The psych doc told me a delusion is a "mistaken belief"-are we all agreed on that??? OK, so I used to believe I was a foreign diplomat from another country. Then when I try and think of the people I ever told that to/led them to believe that-I become upset because I sometimes think they were never even there...never existed. I've never seen any of these people that have supposedly been involved in these delusions-why should I believe it??

I have had many delusions over my period of dealing with my bipolar 1. Some involve the fact that I can fly, that I am a fairy, I am a story teller who created all these broken fairy tales, That I was a witch (god that lasted a long time!). I thought I was a princess! I thought I was God's chosen one!
And this week, i've been told my latest delusion is that i've got a bug that got planted in my head; I don't know who they are, but their in there- not only that, they all own red trucks and drive around town, spying on me. I reached that conclusion while looking down blow at the highway, where constantly there were red trucks passing---so many, i can not even begin to tell you. So, I'm paranoid about everything possible, and I walk out after my appt. and I see my psychiatrist get into a red truck! I flipped OUT! I've been convinced ever since that he was involved---their conspiring against me, and I can't sleep- because i'm manic. Also, If i close my eyes and lay down, or if i fall asleep in general, that the ants will crawl in my ear and slowly eat at my brain.
So basically, I know what a delusion is---and i've had many!! I am currently really struggling with them because i had a bad reaction to a increase in my serequoul! Yeah, NOT FUN! I'm on the verge of being hospitalized for my mania...it's gotten kind of out of control, a little. So i'm hanging in there.
That's my advice to you- hang in there. If you know it's a delusion, then accept that it happened. I wouldn't go seek those people out that were in it, and if you DO know who they are...talk to them...explain your disorder.
Anyways, i just wanted to let you know i completely understand the delusion thing! It's difficult- i know!

| When I was in elementary school I used always check to make sure I was wearing clothes and not walking naked in public. I also thought that I had some deformity that everyone else knew about but me. Do these qualify as delusions? |

When I was hospitalized with bipolar after a manic episode about a year ago I thought there was a chip in my brain and that I was being followed by the government for some kind of military project or something. I was also convinced, just prior to hospitalization, that aliens and the government were debating on whether I should be killed or not. In the past year those intense delusions have faded but I'm still left with a paranoia about someone monitoring my activities and conspiring against me  |

It's been a while, but I believe I'm an alien. That's why the boys in my class wouldn't go out with me, because I gave off an abnormal vibe, and they were afraid of me. Also, when I did get a boyfriend, I would try to figure out what planet they were from. Lol, now a days, people just think it's one my quirks, and they all nod and laugh, and the men think it's oh so cute. *sigh* Lol, I guess I know it's not true, but I kinda wish it were.
All in all you're just another brick in the wall.

I'm having issues with delusions as well. I zone in and out, even when I'm in the middle of my job, which involves caring for an autistic girl and following her developmental progress (I LOVE it, though). Some days I do very well with focusing on HER and HER needs. Other days, I'm so wrapped up in my delusions--I'm an important senator, I'm a gold-medallist gymnast, I'm a tennis player with two Wimbledon titles, I have friends who talk to me about philosophy, I see my own death, etc. It gets so out of control that I will wander around my house for hours on end, mumbling what I believe to be happening. Only when a "real" person walks in do I stop and suddenly realize that hours have gone by and that I look like a "freak." I can't explain it. My mother gets worried and talks of hospitalization. Emotions run high, which stresses me out more and makes me more inclined to retreat into my fantasy worlds where everything works out and I'm valued for my accomplishments. I'm 19 and academically I'm a junior in college because of the credit hours I achieved in high school through advanced programs. I am an honors student on the Dean's List at my universityl and I have professors who keep in touch with me regularly because they are impressed by my writing ability. In the world of academia, I thrive. Outside of that, I'm struggling to find a niche. I have a few close friends who are always there, but even then, it's difficutlt to come out about my issues and be HONEST. I have great doctors, but there are things I am too ashamed to tell them. I have an eating disorder and a drinking problem. Few people know. I'm ashamed as hell and disgusted at myself. Overall, from the outside, my life is fantastic. I have loving parents, I never have had to worry about financial issues, and I have a stable support system. On the inside, though, I'm pulling out my hair and screaming at the top of my lungs when I have to face "reality." Delusions are the ultimate escape. |

A delusion is not just a mistaken belief. Not all mistaken beliefs are delusions.
People can be mistaken because they don't have all the available information. For instance people might be wrong about the cause of psychosis simply because not all the information is known to them (or indeed anyone!).
What about religious beliefs? To some atheists, all religious belief is a delusion (cf. The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins). However I believe in God because I believe there is evidence in the form of the amazing universe we live in and the life of Jesus Christ on Earth as recorded in the New Testament.
Someone of a different religion accepts different evidence as authoritative. A Muslim believes in Allah based on the Koran.
I think a delusion is a belief which is based on evidence of a kind that is not normally accepted in your culture. For instance telepathic communication. The problem arises that in some cultures, direct communication from God or a spirit world is accepted as valid. So people may be regarded as delusional by Western culture who are not in their own.
I have experienced psychosis and my delusional beliefs were motivated by analysis of people's names and numbers of people in a group, and people's ancestry.
For instance I was disturbed that some ancient stone hedges had been destroyed in X by a farmer from another county. I saw this as an act of cultural genocide against the Xish people. This is a true story (or so I read on an internet website)
I hallucinated the words "I am very worried about you. I think you are losing something." during a GP appointment which I interpreted as me losing my Christian faith. I was so shocked with this I did not want to see this doctor again. I found another reason in that for me the name of the GP had negative associations. I went to see another GP in the practice who had an apparently Xish name, so I thought she would be a better doctor for me.
After this appointment, I was referred to a psychiatrist. There was a person in my house who was a vetenairy student from that county(the same one as the farmer) who had the same first name as the GP. I also deconstructed the name of the psychiatrist I was due to see and made associations which pointed to the issue of the stone hedges and the person living in my house.
I had a belief that either the vet student was related to the farmer who had destroyed the hedges, or that she was related to me. I was not certain about this since I had no evidence for it, but the point was I considered ancestry to be an important causative factor.
Therefore I went to see the vet student and told her that all was forgiven as Jesus said to love my enemies. I had the conviction that this would be recognised by God and therefore would heal the wrong that had taken place.
I also proposed marriage to someone based on culturally inappropriate reasons.
These were that our grandparents had each had tea with the queens of X and England respectively. (Although the realm of X does not have a queen of its own, I considered the leader of a certain organisation based in X to be the monarch of X). I though it was necessary for me to propose marriage (not necessarily to be accepted) to create peace between X and England.

a delusion can be encouraged, implanted via psychological warfare etc.
and certain technologies.
and sometimes the dulsion that people are not out to get us is why we are labled delusional lol but true.
psychiatry is the tool of the new spanish inquisition like crusaders lol a tool of policy .. so yes its not always a delusion when we think we are delusional or are labled as such.
but i to have delusionial tendencies.
and reading your responses has helped me thanks |

The point was though there was a big change in my thinking over the space of a few days. It was like having an entirely different worldview.
What technologies are you thinking of? Do you mean brainwashing techniques, psychedelic drugs?

But where do delusions come from? Are they primarily caused by perceptual abnormalities, i.e. the fact you might have a sense of being watched, or think you're receiving telepathic communication, or disorders in thinking itself?
I think it is the latter since my delusional ideas occurred before any hallucinations. It is hard to know the exact problem in thinking that is involved. Sometimes it is confusion over one's own identity that leads some people to believe they are someone other than they really are. But I started having delusional ideas long before I lost my sense of my identity.
Does anyone know how delusions develop psychologically speaking?
I read a book by Richard Bentall - Madness Explained which made a good effort at explaining paranoid delusions, saying that people who are paranoid are so because they make external personal attributions for especially negative things. But why do they do so even when this is not supported by rationality?

My "delusions" are not delusions but I will tell you what they are. Some are very similar to Mikook's delusions about the brain chip and aliens/ government conspiracy against me. I have a bomb in my neck that was implanted by cloaked FBI/CIA agents that are occasionally in my house. Sometimes I can hear them talking and I bet its about plotting to get me. I also hear noises from them, but I love the gov! They are spending a lot of money and time into me, aren't they sweet? They keep on telling me about a "test" that they want me to get out the bomb to save 300 million people. I live in the US. If it goes off, it is the start of World War 3 and billions will die because the bomb is more powerful than a nuke and the gov won't admit it was them who did it and then we will think its another country that bombed us and boom! World war 3 has begun. Now I just heard a lot of beeping and no one else heard it. I had to rush out of the shower because I either thought it was the beeping from a bomb about to go off or the fire alarm going off. It was a stupid hallucination, yay for me. Other people have been implanted with high powered bombs, the gov is targeting psychics. I caused and predicted the recession or great depression or whatever you want to call it. The aliens think I am special and I am the "chosen one" because I have a purpose for them but they haven't told me what yet. They come from another galaxy. There are also nanobots (microscopic robots) that are in me and I feel them all the time and they have the capability to turn me into a robot. When I am outside I am scared to death because of this satellite the gov has that is armed with lasers to kill me so I have to move in weird patterns so they can't get a lock on me. The gov has many ways of killing me, lets hope they don't detonate the bomb anytime soon. Sometimes I "lose" my language and start speaking gibberish and think I am a bird and can fly. I know that one is a delusion. I know I am not a bird but when I'm in that "mode" I really believe it. I also have thought insertion and thought broadcasting, both of which are very annoying like my brother. I am having a "mixed" episode right now and have been diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder even though I don't agree with that diagnosis because I don't think I am psychotic. |
