Hi there, I have been suffering from mdd for five yrs now and for the last two-three yrs, have had no sucess with any of the upteen antidepressants, mood stabilizers, augmentation drugs or combinations of antidepressants. I have been off work for over one year, I'm a social worker. This illness has totally affected my daily functionning.

I live in Ontario, Canada where our mental health care system needs severe delivery changes. I have been seeking treatment all over my province, been to many hospitals, and have had no treatment sucess, just being placed on forms, then discharged. I have no psychiatrist,I have no medical support other than my family doctor who can only do so much, no psychs are taking new patients in my community, and I don't know where else to turn.

I feel completely helpless and hopeless, I am crying constantly, I have two small children ages four and six, and need constant help with them. I feel like the worst mother alive, I feel tremendous guilt for missing most of their school year due to being hospitalized. I feel urges to run away, I find help with the kids and sometimes I go numb my pain by getting drunk, and, well, so on.

I have had contacted my MPP's office who were useless, I wrote a letter to the Mister of Health and Long Term Care over one month ago, still no response. I often times feel like this pain will never go away, I have gone to every hospital in Ontario and they just don't seem to take mental health patients seriously. I have had many suicidal ideations and one attempt. I feel so utterly hopeless, I'm hoping that this forum can help give me some support and encouragement to continue the fight. I am open to any suggestions or comments that may help in finding my way out of this deep dark pit. Thank you to everyone.

Hi Stillcrazycrys

Welcome to MyTherapy

I have found it a place of refuge and support and I hope you do too.

I am in Australia so our system is completely different to yours...I feel very frustrated by the lack of support you have especially since you are caring for two young children.

Please know you are not a bad Mum.....you are a caring Mum...bad Mums just don't care......you are doing the very best you can and that is all you can do until someone wakes up in Medical Land and gives you a helping hand. I have mdd too my gp put me on 75 then 150 mg my psychiatrist upped it to 300mg and that is working for me.

Here's hoping one of our Canadian members will call in to advise you how to access your system.

Wishing you the best
Sue

Hi stillcrazycrys

May I too, welcome you to these caring communities of ours, yours too now that you've started to engage with us.

I am in the UK where we have a fully integrated National Health Service, that has just celebrated it's sixtieth year of existence in July.

Hopefully other members who can identify with your issues, will come visit you, and share with you how they manage their lot. They may also have some worthwhile suggestions. We have many members in Canada.

Yours in community friendship, David

PS., On a lighter note, I holidayed in and around Toronto, a year or so back. Stayed with friends in Whitby. Loved it! But gladly, I didn't need t medical treatment whilst there.

The chances are if we always do what we've always done, we'll always get what we've always got!

Thank you for your support Sue, it's nice to hear from people who don't judge. I will continue on, and I'm happy to hear that you are doing well on your meds. I hope I can find the treatment I need too.

Thanks David for your support also. I hope that people will offer support and suggestions too. Thanks for the warm welcome, and Canada is a great country, it is our publicly funded Health Care system which has a long way to go in treating people suffering from mental illness.
