Hi Everyone,
I find trying to explain a mental illness to someone who is mentally healthy is in it's very nature problematic and challenging. This became even more apparent, when sometime ago. I tried to explain a mental health assessment to a close friend.
I think it would be fair to say, that some individuals can appreciate or even empathize with the anguish of mental distress. But can anyone truly understand what another individual is experiencing? Surely this is not possible without being able to access another person's inner self!
At least with a physical illness there is something to view in the context of a broken leg perhaps, or a wound. But what possibly creates a problem is that with the majority of most mental health issues there is no drastic physical change that can be viewed, but only small changes noticed in the individual's physicality.
Which to my mind only goes to highlight the difficulty for another individual to understand the immense distress that another person is going through, without showing many signs to members of the outside world.
That is why I consider that therapeutic communities such as ours helpful, more than that , necessary to help alleviate frustration emanating from the world outside.
Yours in community friendship, David

.... on becoming a member of these communities of ours. Yours too now that you decided to give us the benefit of your company. I hope you get to like it here!
Hi sdella,
You could say I am a volunteer administrator, as are all senior members, in that we are committed to promoting good will across the boards in the interests of harmony.
We are marginalized enough on the outside, so we need to have a safe haven within our communities. And by and large we have attained that.
May I take this opportunity to welcome you aboard the good ship Hope. I am sorry that you are lonely. I trust now that you've joined us here, that will eventually become a thing of the past. For there is plenty of fellowship within the forums.
Please take time to browse what we have here. Post as often as you wish, and visit other peoples topics. That way, you will soon make many friends.
We cherish newcomers, David

Hi, David, Thank you for your words of encouragement. I am trying to begin eac day being thankful the God Lord has allowed me to see the sunshine.
I just have so many irons in the fire that I don't know which wone to put out first. I lost my father in March and my mother has been gone for more than 40 years.
So many of these people in this commmunity appear full of hope despite the adverse circumstances they have lived. When we begin complaining or murmuring about ourselves, perhaps we should look at other people less fortunate that ourselves.
The only one that can change us is our self.
Thank yo for caring. sdella |

I am delighted sdella with such a positive response.
Your absolutely spot on. What ever issues that bedevil me, I am always mindful that there are many, many others who are far less fortunate.
My condolences re the loss of your parents. I too, am parent less now. But then it is expected at my age. My Mom's a big miss but I never really knew my Father.
Your right there is a lot of "Hope" within these communities of ours. That is why, I often endearingly refer "my therapy" as the good ship Hope. Where would we be without it .... I shudder to think!
I look forward in anticipation to many more chats with you, David

Hi Davidt
I think people have difficulty understanding depression, they have no concept of the depths of darkness that it can reach....they are far happier to hear me say I suffer from depression than schizophrenia...they really have no idea of Major depression disorder and I envy their ignorance.
