What Psychological Factors Trigger Your Mania? Research has shown that certain psychological factors can trigger mania in some individuals with Bipolar Disorder.
- Psychological Over-Stimulation
Religious/meditative practices that combine religious euphoria with sleep deprivation are notorious for triggering mania. Other stimulating activities (e.g., gambling, spending money, increased impulsive/sexual activity) can also trigger mania.
- Over-Loading With Activity
Sometimes over-loading with work, writing or social activities can trigger mania.
- Disruption Of Normal Routines
Major disruption in routine daily activities (especially sleep) has been known to trigger mania.
- Interpersonal Conflict
Mania, like depression, can be triggered by conflict. Participating in arguments, and not listening to illness warnings from loved ones is often associated with relapse. The clearest example of this is when individuals, who are starting to relapse, start to argue with their therapists and drop out of treatment. The following questionnaire explores the psychological factors that may trigger the return of your mania.
Here is the first question.
Have bad life events ever clearly triggered your mania?
(Once you answer, you will be shown how our other members have answered.) |

Thank you for sharing your experiences with the rest of our community. Questionnaire Findings
Of our Bipolar Support Community members completing this questionnaire, more than 50% answered "Yes" to the following:
- Good life events have clearly triggered my mania.
- Has increased impulsive/sexual activity ever clearly triggered your mania?
- Has over-loading with work or projects ever clearly triggered your mania?
- Has over-loading with social activities ever clearly triggered your mania?
- Has cutting back on sleep ever clearly triggered your mania?
It would be very helpful to our other members if you could now describe what psychological factors trigger the return of your mania. After you have done this, we will explore what are the things our members can do when they begin to have manic symptoms. |
