Dear Members,
If you have taken lithium, it would be very helpful if you could tell our community your answers to the following questions:
In the treatment of your Bipolar Disorder:
- Was lithium effective in decreasing your manic episode(s)?
Once you answer, you will be shown how our other members have answered. |

Without lithium, I would be dead. But it doesn't work for everyone, and insufficient information and supervision is given to patients newly on lithium regarding fluids/toxicity - in this country anyway (and, in the Australian climate, to not know the risks is dangerous).
Lithium is definitely not a perfect fix, but it's an effective medication for many of us.

When I was put on Lithium I was really 'lost' in hospital. They had been giving me Depakote, which made me feel like I had died and just the body was still working in a very disjointed way. I had no hope. Then they changed my medication to Lithium and it was like a revelation, literally overnight, I became a person again. I had coherent thoughts, I could string two thoughts together. It was amazing. I realise that I still get breakthrough mania and depression, but it's not as bad as before. I'd say it has been a real positive step in my life and I wouldn't cope without it. I know I wouldn't, as I ran out one time and couldn't get to the Dr. The first 24hrs were great I was on such a high, then the low hit me and I still have nightmares about it. I hope my answers and comment help, it's lovely to get the chance to help others. Kind regards, Sarah

I have missed a dose or two, and notice the effects very mach. Cannot conentrate, etc. I would recommend Lithium as it is the first line of defence in BP, and it does work if you give it time.
Sometimes, I may neglect, to say Thank You for your kindness. and love. But, please know, I am eternally grateful, for your friendship, thoughts, and Wisdom. |

I found the only drug that helped with my massive racing thought problems was Lamictal and I had advanced to the point where during parts of the day I was unable to speak in complete sentences, I couldn't put all the words in, I couldn't write coherently, things were just gone.
I was put on lamictal, seroquel, and xanax. Lithium was added as an add on. When I hit the therapeutic level, I destabilized enormously, my mood swings (ultra rapid,) increased tremendously, and I had so many side effects I felt awful. No matter how much water I ever drank, I always felt like I was dying of thirst in the desert, I had tremors, my motor coordination (I draw,) it was wrecked, I gained weight, I was always swinging between one mood and the other.
I would not ever take this drug again. It was a disaster.
Lamictal, in me, has no side effects, and it elegantly organized my thoughts.
