Dear Members, Many psychiatrists are becoming aware of how the pharmaceutical industry has purposely misled them and their patients. As psychiatrists, we know that medication plays an extremely important role in relieving the suffering of mental illness. Research now has shown that there are minimal differences between the effectiveness of psychiatric medications in the same class. For example, there is little difference in effectiveness between the different antidepressants. Likewise, there is little difference in effectiveness between the different antipsychotics (except clozapine). Unfortunately, the pharmaceutical industry is doing everything in its power to deceive psychiatrists and patients into falsely believing that one drug is superior to another identical drug in its same class. This deception is costing patients literally billions of dollars. Please read the following articles that describe this problem.

Thanks for these references, Dr Long. It's always been the same though, even with the old drugs like the tricyclics. Doctors get their "favourites" and it's upon that basis that individual prescribing is done. I guess that's often on inducements from drug companies. Speaking as someone who has had more shrinks than hot breakfasts, it is such a PAIN when changing therapists and being expected to drop one drug and take another, just because it's a personal 'pet'.
Also, if these medications are so interchangeable, don't you wonder about how much of their effects are real and how much placebo? I do. Yet another reason - in manic moments - to stop taking them!

What particularly irks me is when a new Rx is written using a pen supplied by the mfg!! My horrible experience with Effexor began that way. I was in a real tizzy and not on anything. Wait to see a pdoc was months long so GP wrote my first Rx with A Wyeth/Effexor pen. I did no research and simply began my "side-FXr" as directed. Never again. That drug in particular has way too short a half life for a drug in its class IMHO.
But on the other hand, I've been given many a free sample of a new-to-me meds (gotta love the meds-go-round) which I assume were provided to my pdoc by a rep. And I must admit I prefer that than filling an expensive Rx which I cannot tolerate so don't finish -- say for Risperidone which gave me a facial tick!
Peace out, m22g

dr.long i will make time to carefully study the links you have just provided.
if you had an advocacy section. i would study it non -stop. the bad people in this world are hurting disabled people, robbing us all.
if you could hook me up with some links. i that will teach me how . i will fight the scum, with books, bats , bricks whatever i must do.
if it would make a difference, id whack a bad guy or two to save peoples loves from being destroyed.
i used to believe in the system , i used to believe in civility. all i can think of now is war because that is how it really works where i live. its whos nuttier and more vicious. etc gets rights, respect for themselves and others.
im not unstable im just being honest. alot of people fought and died in world war two so i could grow up free. it will take another war to restablish decency, safety.
i want to fight them . what are the steps? are there undercover cops , snitches in mental health im not a rat , unless you screw with a disabled person. not you anyone. i could go off my meds go manic and be admitted etc to a hospital , program etc and get dirt on them for the cops. id do it for free. and id be very good at it.
are their jobs like that. volunteer or other wise. i hate them doctor long . i need to do something constructive with that emotional stuff. and i need to beat up in whatever fashion those harming the disabled to over come the helplessness i felt in that program and else where.
this a great idea. thank you and please continue.
i hope i did not make you angry the last time you made an obseervation regarding me. if so i apologize |
