Hi, Went to my first day after the initial orientation--of volunteering at the Art Institute Members' Archives.
I set the limit of just one hour to start for today.
Just to set foot near the Art Institute had my stomach tied in knots. (Intense Fear) + (Intense Desire) = upset stomach and clammy hands (and racing thoughts and paranoid thoughts). This afternoon, I got started on filing of Members' information. I was so preoccupied with keeping my emotions in check---that I was barely able to follow the alphabet in filing. I started to wonder if I appeared to be illiterate.
Then I blurted out--"I've been lonely, so I've been looking forward to coming here." (I said that after the woman who was training me said that most of her family was dead when we were talking about our Thanksgivings).
And then there were the simple courtesies that had me choking back tears (after being so distanced from most people for so many months)--simple courtesies such as showing me where I may hang my coat, and offering a safe place for my purse,...offering me a cup of water.
EEeeeeek...I'm glad I decided on the one hour timeframe. I started to get bewildered by peoples' idiosyncrasies---(e.g., a woman in the office suddenly walked over and said loudly, "I just ate so much I feel like I'm pregnant!" [sometimes i puff my stomach out when i'm scared so i've been worried since i got home if i looked like i was pregnant...i took 300mgSeroquel before going to volunteer, and i still had some paranoia/grandiosity/racing-obsessive thinking]
But hell, it's a Start (at the very least, yes, a start!)
Thanks for reading, I'm grateful for this place to express my thoughts and feelings re: occupation.

EA, I'm so proud of you! You're doing great!
I was trying to talk to my neice about getting her first job the other day (she's 17.) Her mom is disabled because of social anxiety...and she fears she has the same problem. Tried to tell her that its normal to be nervous about entering the job scene, whether you've been working for years and are getting a new job, or you've never done it before.
I know for me, when I get out in public, I find myself blurting out stuff, as well....think sometimes it's not really that odd, it's just I have been couped up in this house so long, talking mostly to a five year old...kinda hard adjusting to adult conversation at times....
don't even know if that made any sense or was helpful....
I started babysitting again this week. First day with an 8 week old baby Monday. I was so nervous, I spent all day Sunday trying to get ready for anything that might come up...quite to the excessive.
But, now, after a few days, I really feel better about myself...like I am useful again.
Thanks for being honest. It helps me.

Hi Dizzy, So how had you started with the babysitting job? Is it a friend of yours?
I'm leaving for work in about 10 min. It's a 6hr day. I feel fairly comfortable anticipating it today. I'm going to stop at Dunkin Donuts and get myself a coffee beforehand. It's sunny out which always helps.

Hi Dizzy, Work went smoothly today, I'm glad. I've decided to start up volunteering at the AIC in January.
How is babysitting?

Hello, Volunteered today at the AIC, filing. I was glad I did, I had put it off from earlier this week, mostly out of fear. I'd told the woman I'd be there on Tues, but I didn't go and I felt kind of bad that I didn't show up when I said.

Hello, So far, I have gone to volunteer at the AIC Membership Office doing filing now for 5 weeks. I'm getting to know the people and my fears are lessened.
I was supposed to volunteer yesterday, but I felt too much stress because we are going on vacation soon, so I called an cancelled and told them I would be volunteering when I get back.
I haven't come upon any job op's by doing the volunteering there so far. The good thing is that I had a very interesting conversation with the manager there who is also an alum of the School of the Art Institute there and he was telling me about how he prepares a surface for drawing and it was something I had never thought of before and it was like a whole new world opened up to me in that 20 min conversation!

Hello, Had interview for Gallery Officer at the MCA. They are looking for somebody to work Fri, Sat, and Sun. Fri and Sat the shifts could be as late as midnight. I don't want to do that. If they call me back to hire me, I plan to tell them I can only work Sunday, unless I can work during the day on Fri. The pay is only $8/hr. I got a bad vibe from the manager, he was very wishy washy when it came to talking about the hours I might work.
I want to make sure I work during the times I am comfortable with. I'm going on vacation so I will get in touch with them in early March.
