I wonder if there are any others out there who share my problem? Essentialy, I can not seem to hold a job.
This has become more and more critical, loosing jobs on the very first day. This seems to tell me that my illness is getting more and more perverse and the frightening thing is that I seem to be getting more worse than better (after many, many years of this torture).
Feedback anyone? |

Hi and welcome, Liza.judy There have been phases with me where I couldn't function at a job. (So I quit or got fired or called in sick all the time).
What are you looking for?

Hello Emerging Artist,
I am a teacher, more specifically, a music teacher. I'm sure you can relate, I have been fired from just about every job I've ever had - could this be you?
So now, my school closed a year ago. I am substituting, and still get fired.
I am now on disability. I had some major health problems this year. I'm just glad that I have my husband and my 2 kids - grown by now, leaving me a big ole' house to feel lonesome in.
Et tu, Brutus? (Caeser)

Fired? Yep, been there. I had a career as a mid to upper level manager in the software development field. It took me 2 master's degrees and 15 years to earn my position and reputation, and then *poof*, I just couldn't hold a job anymore.
I've had to change careers to something more flexible and with people who are more likely to understand the ill effects of bipolar disorder.
It is horrible to hang my head and go see my supervisor and explain that I was a no show the day before because I couldn't get my head out from under the covers, but if I want to work, I have no choice. And by the way, this is actually volunteer (but close to actual "work" in many respects) because I think I'll need to apply for disability. I'm managing to work 15 or so hours a week, and that feels monumental, so I know I certainly can't work 40 hours a week. Not to mention, I'll never make the money I was in my "professional" career.
Look for the right fit, consider changing careers if you have to, be up front with your employer to begin with because if they can't handle the truth at that point, they won't be understanding later. You don't even have to say you struggle with the symptoms of bipolar disorder, just that you have a medical condition that requires certain flexibility. (ahem)

Losing jobs suck? The fear of starting a new one is even harder the more you lose. Yeah, it is a bit hard to explain why I was sick all the time. Often I told the truth and had understanding employers. There is only so understanding a person can get when they are your boss. When it is time to lay off you are the first person they think of as unreliable. It got to a point where I had to apply for disability. It took me two times applying for state assistance and two worker retraining courses to get to the point I finally threw in the towel and applied for SSDI. Got it first try! I guess that is hard to do. Luckily I had a non-profit agency helping me fill out all the forms. But, still had to flunk the medical exam to get approved. I didn't even have to fake it. I actually had a panic attack in the interview. Anyways. Loosing jobs might mean you need to rethink what you are doing. Disability is not the end of the world. Yeah, it ain't much money, but at least you have time to think. Right now I am going on two years of not working , one year of state disability, and 9 months into my SSDI. I still think about going back to work. It can be awful to sit at home and stew in our depression. I am not old either, 34. I have hopes still to try to deal with my disability and work at least part time or volunteer. Besides these discussion forums there are a lot of agencies out there that can help you. Don't feel ashamed or afraid to ask you doctor to refer you to someone who knows. There is usually a social worker attached to you clinic or HMO.
